If the tooth currently has a significant crack it should have a crown placed on it to prevent increase in the size of the crack and subsequent loss of the tooth. Whether or not the crack is sufficient in size to warrant a crown is a judgement call on the dentist's part. It's important that you seek care from a dentist in whom you have trust. If this is the case with your current dentist I would recommend having a crown done. If you have doubt you might want to get a second opinion.

Slight sensitivity to cold does not necessarily indicate the need for a root canal. The pain would need to be a lot more severe and consistent to indicate the need for root canal. It is difficult to say with certainty, but the crown may alleviate the sensitivity. Unfortunately, this is not a certainty. The nerve of the tooth, like the rest of the body, is somewhat unpredictable.
