I have a painful lump in the center on my right jawline, I

Customer Question

I have a painful lump in the center on my right jawline, I can also feel the lump from the inside of my mouth at the base of my gum(where the gum meets the cheek). I am currently taking antibiotics for a middle ear infection in my right ear. The pain and lump in my jaw started the day after my ear infection was diagnosed. I have been taking motrin for the pain and that seems to be working. I just want to know if the ear infection could have caused the pain and lump in my jaw, or is it something else?

Dr Mariana :

Hi, I am here to help you.

Dr Mariana :

From the position where the lump is situated, I do not believe it is an ear infection

Dr Mariana :

Can you hold on for a second?

Customer:

sure

Dr Mariana :

I am on the phone with a patient...

Customer:

should I come back later?

Dr Mariana :

I'm almost done...

Customer:

ok

Dr Mariana :

I'm so sorry!!!

Dr Mariana :

I just put braces on a little girl...

Customer:

it's ok

Dr Mariana :

and she had tons on questions!

Dr Mariana :

I'm back now...

Dr Mariana :

So, from what I was reading...

Dr Mariana :

I do not believe the lump is from the ear infection

Dr Mariana :

Do you have a cavity ,or an old filling in the area where you have the lump?

Customer:

just 2 root canals

Dr Mariana :

ok...

Dr Mariana :

It can be originated from there too...

Dr Mariana :

what antibiotic are you on?

Customer:

amox

Dr Mariana :

That will also work on the tooth… that is why you are feeling less pain...

Dr Mariana :

Will you continue the antibiotics for the weekend?

Dr Mariana :

When did you start them

Customer:

Saturday, the pain in my jaw returns as soon as the motrin wears off, about every 8 hrs

Dr Mariana :

ok? Did you go to the doctor? did he diagnose the ear infection?

Dr Mariana :

because a tooth infection can give you ear ache….

Customer:

yes, I went last friday. She said I have both a liddle and outer ear infection in my right ear. I also had sinus cogestion but that is gone now. Also my ear does still hurt.

Dr Mariana :

Ok… The antibiotic should help until you see the dentist. You will have to call and try to get in on Monday.

Dr Mariana :

In the meantime, try warm salt water rinses,

Dr Mariana :

continue with the Motrin

Customer:

can a tooth that had a root canal cause pain and an infection?

Dr Mariana :

or you can alternate every 3-4 hours between 1000 milligrams of acetaminophen (2 Extra-Strength Tylenol tablets) and 400 milligrams of ibuprofen (2 tabs of Advil).

Dr Mariana :

yes, it can...

Customer:

unfortunately tylenol does not work on me

Dr Mariana :

even if the nerve is dead, the infection goes beyond the tooth and into the bone and can cause pain

Dr Mariana :

the combination is more effective than Advil alone...

Dr Mariana :

try alternating it

Customer:

I will give that a try

Dr Mariana :

You have to go to the dentist on Monday….

Dr Mariana :

Tonight

Customer:

ok, I will call

Dr Mariana :

you need to sleep with an extra pillow

Dr Mariana :

because lying down will make the swelling worse

Dr Mariana :

ok?

Customer:

ok

Dr Mariana :

Is there anything else I can help you with?

Customer:

no thanks, ***** ***** it.

Dr Mariana :

Ok, then….

Dr Mariana :

Keep me posted and good luck!
