My four-year old's gums have turned dark over a matter of

Resolved Question:

My four-year old's gums have turned dark brown over a matter of months. His father and I, and all of our immediate relatives, have light/pink gums. Because we're African American, however, the darkening has been dismissed as more of a cultural trait. I'm concerned that we may be overlooking a deeper problem. He did roll out of bed a few months ago and damage the root of one tooth that we're told will eventually fall out. Would that cause gum darkening??

Thanks for any insight that you can offer.

Well, that's pretty much what I've been told, but my concern is that they weren't always dark brown. Why would they turn from pink to brown now??
