Selling stolen goods is still a crime, the fact that he "only" sold them doesnt really change much. My guess here is that the state thinks that the buyer is innocent. To prosecute possession of stolen property the buyer has to know the item was stolen. Buying stolen goods in itself isnt a crime as the buyer would be considered a victim too usually

Clearly the state thinks it can prove that your fiance knew they were stolen when he sold them and thus is a crime.

No you should not pay him not to show up as that is some sort of bribery or other crime. If you can prove it, email or texts, take it to the prosecutor. If it is was only on the phone you wont have much evidence to prove that was said though. Everything is what you can prove, and unless you have physical evidence they can use in court, more then he said in person or phone, there isnt much the state can do about it. They wont be able to prove it in court.

Either way dont pay as YOU would be the one witness tampering actually by paying a witness against your fiance not to show up to court; it is setting you up for a hard fall here. The case will work itself out as long as fiance has a good criminal defense lawyer.
