It is certainly something to worry about. Your question was "how to handle this now"? I assume what you want to know is how to handle it without worrying about getting criminal charges and there is only one answer, other than to just pay them yourself.
You need to get a lawyer and let them handle it. Nothing they say can be used against you and they can get it resolved with the least cost and least potential for trouble. Once you have an attorney then they can only talk to the attorney.
