This is a misdemeanor charge and if it's his first contact with the criminal justice system, he will probably be offered a diversion kind of disposition whereby he can pay a fine, perform some community service, attend an anti-theft class or program and be supervised by the department of probation. The matter will be dismissed afer his successful completion of the program.
Nevertheless, because the facts of each case are different and especially should this not be his first time in front of a juvenile court judge, a lawyer is advisable to make sure his rights are protected and that he gets the advice he needs to make an intelligent decision on his case.
