VerifiedDear JACUSTOMER - You are correct. She needs representation and if she cannot afford a lawyer she needs to ask the court to appoint counsel. I seriously doubt any judge is actually going to sentence her to jail under these conditions but she may be sent to some hospital setting for mental observance due to her age. Whatever the case, she needs to be represented and make certain that all of her rights are protected and that she is not coerced into pleading to or saying something she shouldn't. If you are in CA there's little you can do directly so hopefully your sibling or family friend can help your Mom obtain counsel.
