Under New Jersey law, a crime of the third degree is punishable by three to five years in prison. NJ Stat., Section 2C:43-6. Unfortunately, that means that, if you are convicted, you will end up spending some time in jail.
When you go to the initial appearance, the judge will advise you of the charges against you and inform you of your right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you. The lawyer will then be able to review the evidence and see if there is some way to have the charges reduced, or negotiate a suspended sentence, or something like that.
