I'm sorry to hear of your dilemma.
Depending on your son's record, yes it may play a part in sentencing if he is convicted.
Strong armed robbery is a very serious crime and is prosecuted as a felony in the state of Maryland.
Under the MD Criminal code:
The fact that yous son stood with his "friends" while the robbery took place is not an excuse and all the DA needs to show is that there was an agreement to commit the action that constituted the crime.
The minimal juvenile criminal record he has should not play a part in this matter. However, it is likely that he will receive a jail/prison sentence in this matter simply based on the crime involved. This is a crime of violence and the courts don't generally grant probation in these cases.
Your son is in real need of an experienced criminal defense attorney---not one that might be appointed for him by the state, but one who can spend the time and has the investigative resourses to do the best job for your son.
Be careful about considering using your home as collateral for bail. People facing emergency situations do not always thing straight and fleeing is a natural reaction--especially when the prospect of several years in prison is looking them in the face.
