The Nevada Criminal Statutes don't have one entitled "public urination." Do you know what statute you are charged with violating?
Ok! I found it. Public urination is a misdemeanor, which means that the maximum penalty is six months imprisonment and a fine of $1,000. But, if you don't have a record, you probably won't get the maximum.
When you go to court in three weeks, that's your initial appearance. The judge will advise you of the charges against you and ask if you want to enter a plea. If you plead not guilty, he'll give you a court date and you'll have to come back for trial. Usually what happens with these, especially for a first offense, is that the DA will say that he waives the possibility of imprisonment. That's good, because it means you won't go to jail, but it also means that you have no right to a public defender.
In the unlikely event they don't waive imprisonment, the judge will only appoint an attorney if you can't afford one, so there's not really an issue as to whether it is better to hire one on your own. But, I can tell you that, with a maximum of a $1,000 fine, a lawyer will usually cost a lot more.
Nevada Revised Statutes, Section 179.245 allows you to have records of a misdemeanor sealed two years after you are released by the courts - practically speaking, if you just pay a fine, it would be two years after that.
