I want to offer a cash reward for information leading to recovery

This answer was rated:

I want to offer a cash reward for information leading to recovery of jewelry stolen from my home. I want to notify the suspect's friends, via email, of this reward. Am I legally allowed to state who the prime suspect is and that she has been questioned several times by law enforcement? I want to avoid any libel or slander issues. I live in Indiana.
I don't think you have to worry about slander or libel but you do not want to say anything that is untrue. Truth is an absolute defense in any defamation case. If you suspect the person because of what someone else said rather than on the basis of fact, that could lead to problems.
