Should a 19 year old hire a lawyer on his first charge of theft

Should a 19 year old hire a lawyer on his first charge of theft of property of less than $50.00 in Arkansas?

that would be a Class A Misdemeanor - and does carry a penalty of up to one year - as the law reads "five hundred dollars or less" that is the cutoff - if there is jail time involved, a local lawyer would be wise for a consult to try to work out a probation of deferred adjudication
