business. It was for...
I am a victim of a scam which I believe it is a fraud business. It was for a Loan of $7,000 where I had to buy I-Tunes card for them to process the loan. They said they would return all the money back, but because I wasn't banking through their bank (Bank of America), they needed to do it this way. I bought into it until I could not pay my rent. Now I'm about to be evicted and I can't find a way to prove what went on. It's embarrassing all the money I've lost (about $2,500)
JA: OK. To minimize me, please click the down arrow at the top right corner of this box.
Customer: I've asked the guy I was dealing with to email me to let me know what the total amount is at the time. By the way, I've stopped since end of April. I know I shouldn't have continued, but I was desperate as I was 3 months behind rent.
JA: Oh, dear. I'm sure the Fraud Examiner can help you. Is there anything else the Fraud Examiner should be aware of?
Customer: I've lived in my apartment in NYC for 22 years. I came to a decision that I may have to live with my brother with his wife and kids in NJ until I sort things out since I practically can no longer afford paying my rent. The rent went up as $9,000 and change due to legal fees and late fees. It's there a way I can report it to the police? It's there a way to go after them and get my money back?

Yes, you can certainly report the fraud to the police, and you can report this as well to the FBI at their Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.IC3.gov and to the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov

If you can find these thieves you can have them prosecuted and you could obtain restitution through the criminal justice system when they're convicted. Alternatively, you could sue them in small claims court if your losses were $2,500. The difficulty is that finding them is likely to be close to impossible.

The reason that they wanted payments by iTunes cards is because the money can't be traced to them. And you're likely to find that whatever contact address you had for them will not check out. Most scammers prey on victims in other countries, so they may not even be within the reach of US law.

If that's the case, your money won't be recovered. I can however, offer you one piece of positive news. As the victim of a crime, your unreimbursed losses are tax deductible. So in the worst case scenario if the authorities can't bring your scammer to justice, you will still be able to get something back in the form of a deduction when you file your 2017 taxes.
