If you do not respond to the lawsuit, the creditor will obtain a judgment by default against you.....and after that occurs, the creditor can garnish wages, levy execution against bank accounts, etc. to collect.

If you want to defend against the claim, you'll need to respond and appear in court.

The only real way to avoid this debt (if you have no defense to it) is to file bankruptcy and have the debt discharged.
