Customer: I have a 2006 John Deere series II skid steer. I was dragging brush backwards with the bucket and the machine stopped. I believe the “Parking” button stopped the machine. So now the skid steer will not turn over and the bucket has the two front wheels elevated off the ground. The fluids are full, the battery is charged. When I turn the key I can hear the fuel pump go (just like normal) however the skid steer does not turn over. I am trying to decide if the problem is a safety device of the tractor, or bad starter. Thanks

Using a voltage tester see if you have voltage going to the small S terminal on the starter solenoid when trying to crank over. If your battery is fully charged and all of your cables and connections are good with a good battery but the starter won't crank over with power at the small S terminal, it points towards a faulty starter solenoid in starter assembly. If you have no power at that terminal then it is either in ignition switch problem or a safety switch problem. Check the wiring and connector pins as well as power in and out of the ignition switch in each position. If everything electrical checked out good, check for a potential mechanical failure that may have occurred causing the engine to bind up or if the hydraulic system had a failure that could cause the engine to bind up resulting from a load on the hydraulic system. It's a pleasure to help anyway I can.

Customer
What is the s terminal on the solenoid?

The small wire that is from the ignition switch. That's the signal wire from the ignition switch.

Customer
Got it

Pleasure to help. That should have 12 volts when trying to crank the engine over.

Customer
Ok will try it out now.
Customer
Ok now its running but parking brake will not turn off. Any ideas?
And now the temperature gauge doesn't work

I would try a wiggle test on your wiring harness to see if you find any poor connections in the wiring but also do a visual inspection of all your wiring and connector pins for any corrosion or damaged. Do a complete fuse and relay check, also check all your safety interlock switches such as your seat switch, lap bar/seat belt, and/or switch if equipped with an enclosed cab.

Customer
Ok, well I got it running !!!! I jiggled the wiring harness and decided it was the electronic stuff and not the starter. So I bought the electronic cleaning fluid from Napa, removed and put back and sprayed all connections behind the instrument panel. I also put anti corrosion spray on them to so they slipped back together very easily. Now the tractor runs great. I contacted the old owner and he told me that the Parking switch had been replaced before. I also know the old owner kept the machine outside. So I figured that the connections must get corroded quite frequently. Makes since, since the skid steer was used in construction and is working in very hostile enviorments of dust, mud, rain, etc.

Thank you for the update and I'm glad to hear that you got this resolved. That's great news!
