case ih 1896 power shift problems, sometimes will work fine, sometimes will go into first but not 2 or 3,somtimes will not go forwards in 1st but will in 2end
then maybe back to 1st. not able to do much testing but here is a similar case I found The only problem we ever had was a plastic injection molded part that held the electrical contacts for the powershift broke. This made shifting the powershift very unpredictable and scary to drive. I believe the replacement part was around $50 and was easy to replace. the tractor is unpredictable and dangerous and I wondered if it could be the same problem.

Hi sorry for the delay as I had a medical emergency. It is possible of a duplicate problem however it may be a good idea to check for that first but before I would do that check the oil condition to see if there are signs of the oil being burnt or discolored which would confirm an internal problem or failure occurring. Check for any signs of metal or debris that would flag an internal component failure as well which would require disassembly in further bench inspection for repair or rebuild. This is what I would look for first as if found the transmission will have to come apart anyways for further inspection. If okay it would be a good idea to inspect the control valve for any trash or debris as well as any damage or scoring on the valves that would cause them to stick or function improperly. Have your pressure is tested in be sure they are within the manufacturer specs as well. Respond back with the results and if we need to dig deeper into this. Please remember to take a moment and rate my answers as that is how the site credits my time helping on the site. Five-star ratings and bonuses are always greatly appreciated.
