Customer: The BL60 loader bucket will not tilt when temp gets down to freezing. Raises and lowers ok. The control lever will not mover either left or right.
JA: What is the model/year of your Volvo?
Customer: It is a BL60 and I think 2006 is year
JA: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: really nothing as I suspect the cable for self leveling motor is the culprit
JA: How many miles are on the car? Is it an automatic or a manual transmission?
Customer: this is a back hoe not a car!
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: Only that it is not a vehicle but a piece of construction equipment

Hi ,My name is***** will be glad to help. We can follow up as needed on here, Give me some time to review your information and post my responses. Im not an employee of the site but I help on here as time allows in between jobs. Response time will vary depending on my work load , etc. Do you have the serial number handy or can you confirm if electric over hydraulic controls or pilot pressure controls?

Customer
Hi Dan, I can have the serial number tomorrow, not sure on control

In either case if temp is a factor then check the control valve itself for sticking mechanically preventing the tilt/curl function from working. I just saw where you mentioned the controls are sticking. This would be due to a problem in the control valve. Clean out the valve and reseal... If unsuccessful replace the valve if damage or scoring is found. also check for debris in the valve. Let me know

That will be fine if we need to dig deeper into this as it will allow me to look things up machine specific.

We can follow up as needed on here.

When ready please take a moment to rate as that is how the site credits my time helping on the site or let me know if you need more help. 5 star and bonuses are always greatly appreciated.

Customer
This problem is due to freezing I am sure, valve works fine when temp is above freezing. The control lever is frozen rigid for left to right movement, curl and dump. I need to know what is freezing and how to prevent it as it is parked outside. Thanks ***** *****ke

If this is the BL60 and not the BL60B then click above for the control diagram. Check the cable for sticking by disconnecting it and see if the control handle them moves freely and do the same with the linkage.... I would check the cable first.

Customer

Customer
Hi Dan,
Do you have any info on the freezing of the handle or cable on the back hoe. I was waiting to see if you came back with any definite info after I gave you the SN #.

Jim, I looked it up and Im not seeing anything as far as bulletins, etc. Ive worked at several dealers and contractors before going on my own. When these things happen due to age and environmental conditions over time it is just a matter of putting your hands and eyes on it to confirm. Nothing in any manual is going to tell you if your machine has a frozen cable needing replacement or a linkage or stuck spool in the control valve. You have to disonnect one cable end and then try to move it to see if it is frozen. If not, you them try to manually move or shift the control valve spool and do the same for the linkage. You will know which is binding after this check. Any shop, mechanic, or dealer will need to do the same thing. That is the troubleshooting process. not everything is in a book or video unfortunately. I hope this clarifies things a bit better.
