I have a cat 416c Serial#5hk69305 gear issue sometimes have first and second
sometimes third and forth sometimes in gear in neutral. Drained oil Checked
screen and changed filter. No metal in screen oil was clean

Hello,

I am not sure I understand your problem. This transmission is a manual
four-speed with a power shuttle for forward and reverse.

Any loss of drive will affect all four speeds. Are you saying the transmission
is stuck in forward or reverse or, does it loose drive in forward or reverse?

Did you replace the filter? Did you cut it open and inspect it for debris?

If is more likely you are loosing power to the transmission shifter control due
to a failed disconnect switch on either the loader control lever or the manual
shift lever.

Do either of these switches not click when you press them? (NOTE: the switch
failure or wires from these are the most common issue for this transmission.)

The serial number you posted is the engine serial number. This links to a
machine serial number (PIN) 1WR03644. If this is not correct, please let me know
and post the transmission serial number too from the same tag.

Thanks for the reply. Just to be clear, I am saying the four speeds in the
transmission are all mechanical gears, no electronic controls involved with the
speeds.

The only electrical controls are for forward and reverse. Each direction uses a
separate solenoid. I am assuming you are losing direction control in forward and
reverse.

I do not understand what you mean by "trans will stay engaged in neutral". Are
you saying the transmission is locked in a direction and will not go into
neutral? If so, which direction? Are you losing direction control in forward or
reverse?

Have you tested the electrical power to the controller before?

Below are details about the power flow of the shuttle controller. You may be
losing power to the control in the circuit between the loader or speed shift
lever.

You may also be getting a ground from the parking brake but, this should sound
an alarm when the brake switch is grounded.

If I am making this more confusing, please let me know. The circuit is a little
strange but, once you know the layout, it is easy to test.

(NOTE, never apply battery voltage the solenoids. It will cause them to fail.)

Power from the fuse to marked 123 white wire to loader lever switch.
From loader lever switch on 766 green wire to transmission manual shifter
switch.
From transmission manual shifter switch on C933 pink wire to electronic shuttle
control shifter.
This is to pin #1 of the shuttle shift control Pin #2 is the ground black wire
marked 200.
The 419 yellow is a ground from the park brake switch when the lever is set for
the brake applied position.

Thanks for the info, that does clear up my understanding of your problem.

You would have trouble selecting speeds if the shift fork bolt was loose. I have
only seen one of these come loose and it was a very old A model.

I doubt both fork screws would be loose at the same time Unless someone has been
into this transmission before.

I have seen a synchronizer fail for one gear but, not all four synchros fail at
one time.

The 1st and 2nd speeds are on one side of the shaft with 3rd and 4th on the
opposite side shaft.

I would look and the detent springs and balls for each shift rail and see if
they are damaged or corroded.

You can access them from the outside but a special tool is used to help locate
the three detent balls into the shift rails.

One plug is removed and the outer spring, three balls and inner spring all come
out the same hole. (shift lever in neutral)

When installing springs and balls, use Tooling (137-8103) to compress the spring
and load the balls correctly.

I would also inspect the shift lever and mounting as well as the transmission
mounts and bolts attaching it to the engine.
