I have a Volvo bl60 backhoe and the main boom hydrolic piston works going out but won't pull back in to lift bucket arm.

Customer: I have a Volvo bl60 backhoe and the main boom hydrolic piston works going out but won't pull back in to lift bucket arm. If arm is lifted manually with pressure released it goes in but will not hold and arm falls right back down. From what I saw in forums it could be the inner piston seal or the valve in the control unit. Where should I start

Start with testing the cylinder. extend the cylinder , then remove the hose on the extend side, then try to retract, if oil comes out the open cylinder port, the inner seal is bad and cylinder needs repair.
