I need help with a 1997 416c. The machine quit moving. I stopped and let it cool down and it started moving again. Went probably 400 feet and lost it. The machine will not move now when in gear.

Hello, I am sorry I could not answer earlier. I work during the day and answer questions here at night. I hope this is not too late.

I would start by draining the oil from the transmission into a clean bucket. Remove the strainer and inspect it and the oil for debris. Replace the filter and cut open the old filter for inspection.

If you do not find much in the oil, strainer or filter, refill the transmission and check the level with the engine running. Warm the oil to get the correct level on the dipstick.

Use a transmission grade 30W oil with CAT TDTO or TO-4 spec' for best results.

Other oils will work but, just not as good as the TDTO oil.

If you find lots of metal or paper fiber, the transmission has failed and needs rebuilding. Hopefully, you will only find a small amount of anything.

I drained the transmission oil yesterday and it was black. I replaced the filter but have not cut it open yet. I replaced oil and filter and run it up the hill behind my house and pushed out thorn apple trees for about an hour. The transmission did not slip or hesitate at all. I found a little bit of metal particles on the inside of the drain plug but not enough to be very concerned. the machine has 7600 hours on it. Should I expect the tranny to fail soon? What would be an estimated cost for transmission repair or for a remanufactured one

I hope you remembered to remove and clean the strainer. This is important when debris is found in the transmission.

The black color oil is a sign the clutches have been slipping. It should have a burnt smell as well. If it did not, the oil may just be dirty and old or wrong grades mixed together.

If the transmission is engaging quickly and pulls strong even in all gears and all wheel drive is working properly, I would use it normally and keep monitoring the oil color and level. If oil becomes burnt again, then you would know it is slipping and will soon need repair.

A new transmission is over $17,000 and no remanufactured units are sold by CAT. Your dealer may have a rebuild unit they keep or a used option can be found for about half price of new. Your best option is to have yours rebuild as it should cost less if you remove and install the unit yourself. If the dealer does the R&I, the cost may still be around half of new but, it could be less depending on the damage to the transmission.
