I have a cat 246...

I have a cat 246 skid loader awhile back the oil pressure light would come on periodically so I took it to a local diesel mechanic and he replaced the oil sending unit and checked the oil pressure with his gauge and said it was perfect. He told me the idler screw needed adjusted and that was probably the problem. I got it back and the light never came on for about a week. I started it the other day and the light and buzzer came on. Since he told me that there wasn't a problem with it i drove it about three city blocks to the trailer and loaded it. Now it will start and die right away. Then if you try to start it again it pulls really hard like the battery is low. He is now thinking I need a new motor even though he hasn't even tore into it. It is a 2001 cat 246 and it only has 2200 hrs. Looking for any help or advice. Thanks in advance.

Hello, sorry I could not answer earlier. I cannot answer questions in the truck category.

A simple check to see if you have bearing damage is to remove the engine oil filter and cut it open to see what is in it. If you find metal, then you have a failure.

If you don't see anything, drain the oil into a clean bucket and strain it through a screen, paint filter or towel to see what debris is in the oil.

Also look at you water level. Many engines have had head gasket problems and coolant loss would damage pistons. This would make the engine harder to start.

If you see or smell fuel with smoke at startup, this could be a leaking injector. This can make the engine knock or misfire and hard to start.

I would ask him to point to a problem as to why the engine is bad before replacing it.

However, certain models did have oil pressure problems and the engine replacement was the only fix. This varies on the engine and machine serial numbers.
