Customer: I've got a Cat wheel loader model IT28G that the engine is overheating. The operator says that the fan does not spin fast enough unless you rev the engine. Do you think this would be a bad fan drive motor or do you think there are issues with hydraulic pressures. How would I go about diagnosing this. The product identification number is XXXXX

Hi. Thanks for using JA! I will try and help you out.

I would not suspect the fan is not spinning fast enough. I would suspect the radiator may be getting restricted or clogged. I have seen this before.

As the radiator starts getting clogged it is slowly getting less efficient. When this happens the radiator can't cool as effectively at low engine and fan speeds. But when the engine is reved up, the fan produces more air flow and in turn will cool the radiator.

I would inspect the radiator for restriction. It is most likely clogged. A good cleaning of the radiator should help with the overheating.

Please reply back if you need more help or have more questions. I am happy to assist.

Sorry for the delay. It took a while to get a truck loose to haul it to the shop. The top tank on the radiator is split open so we are putting a new radiator in it and then I can test it. The operator says that it had been overheating for a while before the radiator split. The fan is driven hydraulically and he says that it isn't turning as fast as it use to. Once I get a radiator in it where I can test it I will get back with you. Shouldn't the fan turn at a constant speed no matter what the rpms of the engine are?
Thanks for the information Brad.

Yes you are correct. It should turn the same speed. To my knowledge there have been some issues with those hydraulic fans.
