Windows Update service is not running, and is not resolved by a reboot nor running a fixit tool on Microsoft's Support area

Technician's Assistant: What are you having trouble accessing or opening?

I would like Windows Update to check for updates and list critical or important updates for me to install, as it was doing until "recently"

Technician's Assistant: What Microsoft model do you have? And the version of Windows?

Windows 7

Technician's Assistant: How long has this been going on with your computer? What have you tried so far?

I cannot remember for sure when it last said"istalling updates" as I shut down the PC, but I think it was in November sometime. It only occurred to me yesterday that it had been a while since I noticed that, and there has been talk of a security weakness with Intel, AMD chipsets which prompted me to check updates.

Technician's Assistant: Anything else you want the Computer Expert to know before I connect you?

I tried going into the Microsoft website and selecting the "Support" page, and searching on this problem. One suggestion was a "Fix It" tool to download, which I tried yesterday, but this told me everything was OK but the problem is still present.

Hello Cody,
My attempt to complete the "sign in" details bombed out because it required that I provide an American mobile phone number or American fixed line phone number, which I do not have. So I assumed my line of enquiry would just terminate unsuccessfully. However I note that my PayPal account has been charged anyway, which I am quite annoyed about.After my enquiry bombed out, I tried a few other suggestions that I viewed via Google searches, none of which worked. But then, after disabling automatic updates and rebooting, then activating automatic updates and rebooting the problem was cleared and three important and/or critical updates were waiting to be downloaded.Can you please refund the PayPal charge, as I did not end up using your services.
