Over a year ago I created a cmd file as a personal backup system. I want to change the file that all the files are in. The new file has a space in it's name. The old file was 'Britt'. The new file I want to use is 'Britt Backup'. I can't get the new name to work. will send you the output of a run.
Tech Support Specialist: Jason Jones, Computer Expert replied 8 months ago

Send me the file, as well. Thank you.

Tech Support Specialist: Jason Jones, Computer Expert replied 8 months ago

You used the path of: C:\"Britt Barbara"

That is not set correctly.

The correct use of the path would be: "C:\Britt Barbara"

Keeping that in mind, you can rewrite the batch file accordingly. Does that now make sense?

Ask Your Own Computer Question
Tech Support Specialist: Jason Jones, Computer Expert replied 8 months ago

That is a batch file with far too many lines of code.

You can replace all of that with the following line:

XCOPY "C:\Britt Barbara" "C:\Users\Michael\OneDrive\Britt Barbara" /s /e /c /i /q /d /Exclude:"C:\Britt Backup\XCopy\XcopyExcludeO.txt" 0<"C:\Britt Backup\XCopy\XcopyAnswerY.txt"

That will do what those lines of code attempt to do.

Did that work for you?

If I change 'Britt Backup' to 'BrittBackup", no space, it works.

The error is 'Can't read file: C:\"Britt Backup"\XCopy\XcopyExcludeO.txt"

It looks like you didn't place the quotation marks in the same place as I did. Please, try again.

If you wish, the following change would fix it too. In the .cmd file replace "Britt Backup" with BrittB~1

Ask Your Own Computer Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Right removing the space in the file name fixes the problem.
I don't want to do that.
All my personal files are 'Britt Some thing' There are a bunch of them I would like my backup file system to follow the same sceam.
Tech Support Specialist: Jason Jones, Computer Expert replied 8 months ago

You misunderstood. In the command line BrittB~1 equals Britt Backup with a space.

Ask Your Own Computer Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Hold on, I think I see the problem
Tech Support Specialist: Jason Jones, Computer Expert replied 8 months ago

Thank you.

Ask Your Own Computer Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
I didn't.
In the main cmd file there is a line:
Set V_Source="Britt Backup"\XCopy
In the called cmd file there is a line:
XCOPY C:\"%V_Dir%" "%V_Output%\%V_Dir%" /s /e /c /i /q %V_DSwitch% /Exclude:C:\%V_Source%\XcopyExclude%V_Type%.txt <C:\%V_Source%\XcopyAnswerY.txt
The error I get is:
Can't read file: C:\"Britt Backup"\XCopy\XcopyExcludeO.txt
But that file exists.
If I change all 'Britt Backup' to 'BrittBackup', no space, it works.
Is there a fix other than removing the space?
Tech Support Specialist: Jason Jones, Computer Expert replied 8 months ago

Instead of using that over complicated multiple lines of coding, replace the whole thing with the following line:

XCOPY "C:\Britt Barbara" "C:\Users\Michael\OneDrive\Britt Barbara" /s /e /c /i /q /d /Exclude:"C:\Britt Backup\XCopy\XcopyExcludeO.txt" 0<"C:\Britt Backup\XCopy\XcopyAnswerY.txt"

If you do that, you will not have any problems.

The reason I want the complexity is because I have may of these. The complexity gives me the flexibility I want. Do you see no way of fixing the problem other than eliminating some of the flexibility?
Tech Support Specialist: Jason Jones, Computer Expert replied 8 months ago

There is always a way to fix it. I was just not understanding why it was written to be so complex. Please, give me a few minutes to fix this coding.

These were copied and modified from a set where I copied files to an other drive. The files copied depend on whether is is EOD EOW or EOM. I want to combine all this into one backup. Over kill? Yes. Is it the way I want to do it? Yes.

Hello,

Do you still need assistance?

Ask Your Own Computer Question

No one has been able to show me how to use file name 'Britt Backup' as a Substitution in as file name. I know 'BrittBackup', no space, but that is nopt what I want.
Tech Support Specialist: David L, Systems Engineer replied 8 months ago

Would 'Britt_Backup' be acceptable? I use the underscore often when I need the space but am working with programs that don't handle spaces gracefully (such as certain Linux programs).

Ask Your Own Computer Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
No. All files that contain personal information is Britt Something. There is Britt Tax, Britt Barbara, Britt Michael, Britt, etc. here are over 20 of them. I want to keep the scheme for Britt Backup. Before I came I knew that removing the space would work. I am stickler enough that I was willing to pay for a fix. If it can not be fixed, then it can't be fixed, and I will go my own way.
Tech Support Specialist: David L, Systems Engineer replied 8 months ago

Try placing the quotes around the entire path in lines where the error you mention above occurs, such as:

"C:\Britt Backup\XCopy\Xcopy AnswerY.txt"

If that does not work, then include the ^ symbol to escape the space as follows:

C:\Britt^ Backup\XCopy\Xcopy AnswerY.txt

Please let me know the result.

Ask Your Own Computer Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Using "C:\Britt Backup\XCopy\Xcopy AnswerY.txt" eliminates my flexibility for changing the Source Folder 'Britt Backup'
Using C:\Britt^ Backup\XCopy\Xcopy AnswerY.txt
I get
C:\Windows\system32>CALL C:\"Britt^ Backup"\XCopy\"Xcopy OneDrive Called"
The system cannot find the path specified.
There is a space after the ^ is that what you meant? If I remove the space I get:
C:\Windows\system32>CALL C:\"Britt^Backup"\XCopy\"Xcopy OneDrive Called"
The system cannot find the path specified.I assume that you meant to change the file name Britt Backup to Britt^Backup. That does not fit my naming schema and a fix that I found before I came to this site.So again my schema is naming folders that contain information that I create in a folder named Britt Something. That is where Something can be, Barbara, Michael, Tax, Medical, Etc. and there is a space between Britt and Something.Any thing different than that is something I explored and got to work but was unsatisfied. I want the Space. I am a stickler. I'm willing to pay the $47 to find a solution that include the space. Not including the space is not a solution. Can you accomplish that?
Tech Support Specialist: David L, Systems Engineer replied 8 months ago

Yes there should be a space after the escape character as the escape character should enable you to use the space without quotes.

Your example above should be:

C:\Windows\system32>CALL C:\Britt^ Backup\XCopy\Xcopy filename

with no quotes.

Ask Your Own Computer Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
See my files. I run Xcopy OneDrive Test.cmd as the administrator. It calls Xcopy OneDrive Called.cmd
This is only my test. I'm dealing with 20 files being backed up in multiple environments. In order for all of this to work I need constant and heavy use of substitution. Using Set V_Source="Britt^ Backup"\XCopy I get:
C:\Windows\system32>CALL C:\"Britt^ Backup"\XCopy\"Xcopy OneDrive Called"
The system cannot find the path specified.I need a value in V_Source in the calling program that will work.Isa that doable?
Tech Support Specialist: David L, Systems Engineer replied 8 months ago

Instead use:

V_Source=Britt^ Backup\XCopy

as that should work without the quotes.

Ask Your Own Computer Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Really strange. I used Set V_Source=Britt^ Backup\XCopy
What I got from the run was
C:\Windows\system32>CALL C:\Britt Backup\XCopy\"Xcopy OneDrive Called"
'C:\Britt' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
The ^ went away but it still can't deal with the space in Britt Backup.
operable program or batch file.
Tech Support Specialist: David L, Systems Engineer replied 8 months ago
I will be back at my computer and will check on that issue - because the caret disappeared in the output it seems that it may have treated the single space as two spaces.
Ask Your Own Computer Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
Is this item unresolvable?
Tech Support Specialist: David L, Systems Engineer replied 8 months ago

It seems that the caret is recognized but acted as if there were two spaces. Can you double check your script to see if there are two spaces?

If there are not two spaces then try a double caret as that should work if for some reason it acts as if there are two spaces.

With Set V_Source=Britt^^ Backup\XCopy
That is two ^^ and one space the display showed only one ^
C:\Windows\system32>Set V_Source=Britt^ Backup\XCopy
The error I got was:
C:\Windows\system32>CALL C:\Britt Backup\XCopy\"Xcopy OneDrive Called"
'C:\Britt' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.Just to eliminate any question, I have included the two files.C:\Windows\system32>CALL C:\Britt Backup\XCopy\"Xcopy OneDrive Called"
'C:\Britt' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
Tech Support Specialist: David L, Systems Engineer replied 8 months ago

Ok thanks. Next try it again with a space between the two carets.

Ask Your Own Computer Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
I put a space between the two carets and I got:
C:\Windows\system32>CALL C:\Britt Backup\XCopy\"Xcopy OneDrive Called"
'C:\Britt' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.I took the space after the second caret and I got:
C:\Windows\system32>CALL C:\Britt Backup\XCopy\"Xcopy OneDrive Called"
'C:\Britt' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.Do you have another idea?
Tech Support Specialist: David L, Systems Engineer replied 8 months ago

Yes, three other options.

First, you could add the path as a Windows system variable that does not have spaces for each computer where you run the script.

Second, you could use the old 8.3 DOS format by using dir /X ~1 c:\ to get a list of 8.3 names for each directory you access and then use those names instead.

Third, employ the use of cd in your script since cd ignores spaces, for example:

C:\Windows\system32>cd c:\Britt Backup\XCopy

Please test each of these as one should provide a positive result.
