We own a Sony KDF 55WF655 LCD Projection TV, manufactured

Customer Question

We own a Sony KDF 55WF655 LCD Projection TV, manufactured December, 2004. During a lightning storm last night, we heard a pop sound at rear of TV, lost the picture and detected a burn smell but no visible smoke. When we attempted to turn back on, heard a "whining" type sound so we shut it off and unplugged the TV.Any suggestion re: what may have shorted out inside rear panel and based on your experience, do you think it may be repairable?
Thanks for any input you may have.

Hello, my name is ***** ***** I will be assisting you today.

I work on computers but have experienced this first hand on my own TV.

You did the correct thing by unplugging the TV as soon as you detected a burn smell.

This would mean that a capacitor or logic board has blown and could have caused a fire.

You can probably take it in to have it repaired but you would be better off just purchasing a new TV because the repair is the same price, if not more.

To prevent this in the future, buy a brand new surge protector, as surge protectors are only good once.

I wish I had better news!
