Customer Question

Hard Drive Question
I have an external hard drive that is 8TB.
I accidentally copied over 2 of the same folder (2TB) twice and deleted one of the folders but then it is saying that i don't have any more free space on the drive even though I just deleted the 2TB folder...is there anything I can do to get that space back?

Hi,

I'm sorry about the issue. Please open the external hard drive, then right-click (or Control + click) on a folder, then click on option Get Info, then check the size there. Check the size for each folder as needed.

Please let me know. Thank you.

Hi Viet,

I checked the storage etc. and it is saying that there is only 80GB left on the drive even though I just deleted 2 TB? e.g. while the folder visually isnt there anymore - it hasnt freed up that space?

Sorry, somehow the memory space is corrupted. Can you copy the data from your external hard drive to a folder on your computer

, then open Finder -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility

, then select on your external hard drive device there

, then click on the Erase tab at the top

, make sure the Format option is set to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"

, then click on Erase and confirm

, once done, move back your data to the external hard drive.

Please let me know. Thank you,

Hey - the hard drive is 8TB :) So I dont have that much capacity on my computer...

So there is no way to free up this space without wiping the drive and starting again?

Expert:  Viet - Computer Tech replied 1 year ago.

Sorry, previously you said there is 80GB (not 8TB) left on the drive. Is there 80GB or more of free space on your computer?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

There is 80GB of space left on the drive that has capacity for 8TB....but the issue is that I deleted 2TB of data from the 8TB drive but it still says only 80GB are available...

My internal hard drive only has capacity for 500GB

Sorry, maybe those data were accidentally moved (not deleted) to another folder on the 8TB drive, or there are other data on the drive that you do not need.

- Please download and install the JDiskReport application at the website below:

http://www.jgoodies.com/freeware/jdiskreport/

, then use the JDiskReport to analyze your 8TB drive, and see which folders are taking the most space.

Please let me know. Thank you.
