Have you tried a system restore?
Go to start / run fill in / rstrui.exe
changing the battery shouldn't have anything to do with the system files so yes that is a good start.
The file is n C:\Windows\System32
ok choose a date that is before the battery change
It may not work xp isn't supported by Microsoft be sure you can trust the site you get it from.

If you can bring up google web page fill in Adobe test. Click on Shockwave player If it finishes click on Test Flash Player If that gets installed Then try your web pages it can't get to.
Just wondering the status on your question. Did reinstalling Shockwave player and flash player do the trick?
