Hi, and thank you for asking your question.
First off, please press the Windows key + R to bring up the RUN box.
In the RUN box, type in main.cpl and press ENTER.
In the Mouse Properties window, click on the "Device Settings" tab.
Do you see an option to enable the touchpad there?
Do keep me posted. Thank you.
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
If you are unable to find the concerned option, no issues - just reply back to me below. Thank you.
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Hi, are you still there? Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
i cant find the window key
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
No issues; are you currently replying to me from the laptop which has the touchpad disabled? If so, may I set up a quick remote session, which will allow me to connect directly to your screen and assist you with this issue?
Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
im on a different one
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
are you still there
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay. Now, on the affected laptop, please press the FN key (at the bottom-left) and the F8 key together - does this bring up an "Ultranav Device Settings" window?
Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
this window is still opened, i havent been able to do anything since i disabled the mouse
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Hmm, I assume you don't have an external USB mouse that you could connect to this laptop as well?
Also, please tap the TAB key (on the left) on your keyboard a few times - does it allow you to toggle between the options on the Ultranax screen?
Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
no the mouse i have want fit this lap top. wouldnt you know. and when i pressed the tab key, another window poped up. which is the touch pad properties window.
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
I see. On the Touchpad Properties window that opened up, do you see any option listed to enable the touchpad?
Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
no, but there it has a defaults key on the bottom left, and other opp. at the top but unless theres a way to choise them with the keys im SOL.
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay. At that screen, just press the TAB key once or twice; do you see different options being highlighted as you press the TAB key?
Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
no but the up and down arrows are moving the highlighted options. one says: scroling / one says: pointing/ one says: buttons/ one says: tapping
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay. Now, please press the Windows key (the key with a Windows icon at the bottom-left, between ALT and CTRL), and the R key together. Does this bring up a RUN box?
Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Do you have this key on your laptop's keyboard?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
sorry i took so long, but no theres not one on my key pad anywhere.
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Hmm, that's VERY odd. Did you make sure to check the bottom-left of your keyboard as well (between CTRL and ALT)?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
yes, just my luck! guess they figured i wouldnt need it so they left it off of mine.lol
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
i knew it was old but this is crazy
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
have you give-up
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay. Now in the open Touchpad Properties window, do you see any tabs listed at the top?
Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
yes
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay, what are the tabs? Also, if you press the TAB key a few times now, do you see options circled on, one after the other?
Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
it says: overview (its highlighted) under that it says: scroling. under that it says:pointing. under that it says: buttons. under that it says: tapping. and i can use the up ans down arrows to move the highlighted from one to the other.
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay. Other than "Overview", there are no tabs listed at the top?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
scroling, pointing, buttons, tapping, and thats all at the top.
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Hmm, okay. Now, press CTRL + ESC keys together; does this bring up the Start menu?
Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
the mouse is on the start menu key, so i can open it
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Oh, that's good. Now, after opening the Start menu, press the RIGHT ARROW key and then press UP to highlight the RUN option. Done that, press ENTER. Does this bring up the RUN box?
Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
ok, now what?
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay, now in the RUN box, type in main.cpl and press ENTER.
Does a Mouse Properties window come up? If so, what tabs are listed at the top?
Keep me posted.
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Be right back in five minutes; I need to use the restroom. Thanks!
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
did that, but its not doing anything, i think that window is already open behind the touchpad properties window
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
okay
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay, back - sorry about the delay. Now, tap and hold down the Power button for atleast 10 seconds, until the laptop switches off completely with a tick sound. Next, press the Power button one more time to power the laptop back on, and then try to bring up the Mouse Properties window one more time.
Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
okay, waiting for it to come back on
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay, do let me know once you have gotten the Mouse Properties window up (by carrying the same steps as directed earlier.)
Thank you.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
ok got the mouse properties opened
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay, what tabs do you see at the top, please?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
buttons, pointers, pointer options, wheel, hardware, UltraNav - and it is opened on buttons
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay, that's good. Now, please press CTRL + ESC together to toggle the menus until the Ultranav menu opens up.
There, do you see an "Enable touchpad" option listed?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
all thats doing is causing the start menu to keep poping up
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Hmm. Now, press ALT + TAB, then use the arrow keys/ENTER to select the Mouse Properties window again.
Next, press CTRL + TAB this time, to toggle the menus until you open up the UltraNav menu. Keep me posted.
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Were you able to get to the UltraNav menu this time? Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
frist time i guess i did it wrong, it all disapeared off the screen. had to use run again to get the mouse properties back. so i pressed the ALT + TAB, now theres a little box in the left hand corner, that says move and under that it says close. now what?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
when i click move and the arrow key, the whole box moves
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Please do a restart again. Bring up Mouse Properties one more time. Next, press CTRL + TAB this time to toggle the menus. Let me know if you are able to get to the UltraNav menu this way.
Thank you.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
no, all this is doing is checking and un-checking the box under the button configuration choice
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Hmm, we are doing something wrong here. Are you pressing CTRL + TAB together?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
yes, it keeps doing the same thing
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay. If you press only TAB now, does it circle different things in the window?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
just keeps checking and un-checking the frist box under the buttons option
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Hmm, this is getting very tricky here (without an external mouse.)
Now, open up RUN one more time, and type in the following:
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
Press ENTER. Does a System Restore window open up?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
ok, had to shut it down again, so hang on
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
ok, the restore window is open
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay. So now, we will need to restore your system back to a date and time BEFORE you carried out the changes to the touchpad settings. First off, please check if you are able to use the TAB key to highlight different options on the screen.
Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
its not changing when i press just the tab key
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Look carefully - are any options getting highlighted, i.e. the circle over them?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
the arrow keys (up and down) are highlighting the two options
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay. Highlight Next, then press ENTER.
Do you see a list of restore dates listed at the next screen? If so, are you able to use TAB/ARROW keys to select a restore point dated BEFORE you started having this issue with the touchpad?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
one choice is : restore my computer to an earlier time and the other is : create a restore point. its not hightlighting the next button
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Do you have an external keyboard with you, by any chance?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
yes, but ill have to see if it will work with this laptop
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay, that would be great. Please check, and let me know. Thank you.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
ok
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
sorry, it wouldnt work. it was an extra one i had for an old desk top
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
being i can get the RUN opened can you not gain remote acess to my laptop and work on it that way?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
hey, where did you go?
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Hmm; that's an excellent idea but it might not work since you will need to download and run the remote file itself. Could you open up your browser from the Start menu now, and let me know if you are able to control the address bar on the browser?
Thank you.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
got the brooser opened now i need the address
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
u there?
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay, so are you able to type in the address bar now?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
yes, but im not sure how far ill get but its worth a shot
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay. Please type in the following address now:
http://tinyurl.com/azwl8gu
Press ENTER. You should then see a RUN/SAVE prompt come up at the bottom. Are you able to use the TAB/Arrow keys to press RUN?
Keep me posted.
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Are you still there? Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
ok, i got your address in on add bar and i have RUN thingy opened so what do i type there?
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
After you entered the address, did a RUN/SAVE prompt show up at the bottom?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
yes, but it was gone by the time i got the mouse down there
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
the RUN box is open and the address is in the address bar and hats where i sit
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
suposed to say; and thats where i sit
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Hmm. I have been looking this up further, and without an external mouse/keyboard, it's going to be reallt tricky. We just need to open up the UltraNav menu in the Mouse Properties (as you opened up earlier), and then re-enable the touchpad from there itself. There seems to be some issue with your TAB key as well, so we are unable to use to control the screen options using the keyboard either.
Is there a way you could maybe borrow an USB mouse from someone to just carry out this single step? Do let me know.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
i tried but they that person has the same thing i have. so, the only way is for me to get another mouse?
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Hmm, checking out a few other options we may have. Give me just a couple of minutes.
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay. Now, press Left Alt + Left Shift + Num Lock on your keyboard at the same time.
Do you get a prompt to turn on Mouse Keys?
Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
ok, do you mean caps lock when you say Num lock?
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
No, you should see a NUM LOCK key at the right-top of the keyboard. Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
dont have that one either
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Very, very odd! One more question: could you let me know where did you locate the TAB key that you were pressing earlier?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
this is a windows xp professional eidtion. dont know if that makes a differance. and the TAB key is on the left hand side, above the CAPS Lock key , but when you said the TAB key i thought you was talking about the space bar. oh GOD!
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
but there is no NUM lock or windows key
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Oh wow. Suddenly everything just makes sense! No worries, I'll get you up and running quickly now.
Please re-open Mouse Properties now, then press CTRL + TAB to switch to the UltraNav menu. Done that, let me know.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
now i cant remember how open mouse properties
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
No issues, just open up RUN one more time, and enter main.cpl in the RUN box to bring up Mouse Properties. Next, press CTRL + TAB a few times until the UltraNav menu opens up.
There, press TAB a few times until "Enable TouchPad" is highlighted. Next, press the SPACE BAR once to tick that option. Finally, press ALT + A to apply the changes.
Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
ok, i have UltraNav opened and the space bar is moving the highlighted, but i dont know how to get it to change the option
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
OK, so you just need to press the TAB key a few times until "Enable TouchPad" is highlighted. Next, press the SPACE BAR once to tick that option. Finally, press ALT + A to apply the changes.
Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
enable touchpad is not one of the choices its giving me
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Hmm, what options are listed there please?
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Also, press FN + F8 one more time now; in the new screen that shows up, could you let me know what options are listed?
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Are you still there?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
theres a settings box but thats under enablen trackpoint and theres two options ; the frist one is clicked it says : use as pointing device with advanced features. the other says ; use advanced features only the next section is under Touchpad
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay, press FN + F8 one more time now; in the new screen that shows up, could you let me know what options are listed?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
it didnt do anything , the same window is opened
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
But it was opening up a different screen earlier (by pressing FN + F8), so I'm not sure what exactly is happening here. So, "Enable Trackpad" is there, but "Enable Touchpad" isn't?
If so, open up RUN one more time, and type in the following:
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
Press ENTER. Does a System Restore window open up?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
its on the right screen, im just not sure what to do , to undo what i did. i think if i highlight the settings it will do it
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
do you want me to try it
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay. If System Restore is open, press ALT + TAB, then use your arrows keys/ENTER to select the System Restore window.
There, are you able to use the TAB key to highlight the different options?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
no, you misunderstood.
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
No, don't try Settings - it's for the Trackpad, and not the Touchpad. Did you open up System Restore, as directed?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
its working on the mouse properties screen . yes it has settings under touch pad too
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
im just a slow typer and didnt get it all typed
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
I see. In that case, yes - please highlight Settings using the TAB key, and then press ENTER.
What comes up next?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
now the touchpad properties screen came up
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay. Now, please highlight the "Defaults" button and press ENTER. Done that, press ALT + A to apply the changes. Does this make any difference to the issue?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
it went back to the mouse properties screen
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay, it's just not working this way. So we need to do this another way: do you have the System Restore window open on your screen now?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
ok, let me try one thing, hold on
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
didnt work , ok what next
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay. Press ALT + TAB now and switch to the System Restore window. Once the System Restore window is active, check if you are able to use the TAB key to control the buttons in that window. Keep me posted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
i got the RUN thingy open and cant get it off
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
1. Restart once.
2. Open up RUN.
3. Enter the following:
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
4. System Restore will come up.
Are you able to highlight the buttons using the TAB key now?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
ok, hold on
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
yes highlight is working
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
its asking ; restore my computer to an earlier time. or create a restore point
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay, good. Now, highlight Next and press ENTER. At the next screen, use the TAB/Arrow keys/ENTER to select a date BEFORE you started having this issue, and then select Next > Finish.
Allow the restore to complete, and let me know please.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
i dont understand what you mean,to use the TAB/Arrow keys
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
After you selected Next - at the next screen, do you see a list of dates?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
no theres no dates on this screen
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Did you select "Restore my computer to an earlier time", then clicked Next?
Also, where exactly did you find the FN key earlier?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
the FN key is on the lowerleft hand side of my key board , and i dont know which of the two options on the other screen was clicked, i ask if it mattered and you didnt answer
Expert:  Bryan replied 2 years ago.
Okay. Sorry, I won't be able to assist you further with this issue . I'll open up your question to our other experts now, who can take this further. Thank you.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
then what
Expert:  Robert M. replied 2 years ago.
Hi, I'm Robert and I'll be helping you with your computer question.
have you got a usb mouse you can plug in ? that might help till you get the pad working. you can buy them at walmart for under 10 bucks and i find them at thrift shops for 3
you can try this procedure for doing the restore.
using the tab or the arrow keys should move the highlighted section the way clicking a mouse would. instead press the arrow key towards where you want it to be or just hit tab and it should jump around. look for what section is highlighted and you will see it move. when it is where you would have wanted to click. press the enter key and it will select it as if you clicked on it.
hold the windows logo key and hit R
in the box that appears type
rstrui.exe
hit enter
select restore to an earlier date
you will get a calendar with various restore points for each day
choose one for a date BEFORE the problem started
hit the ok /restore button
the system will start to shut itself down and a blue status line will come up in a box saying restoring your system settings.
when it finishes the system will restart itself.
hopefully everything will work the way it did on the date you selected
