I have a Dell 1521 & I clicked on the House button and now it is stuck on the Dell Media Direct screen. I have tried powering off and then hitting the house button, but it still goes to mediadirect. I also switched from Vista to Windows 7 over a year ago.
I have detached the battery pack for over an hour.
I have keyed PF12 while powering up and then tried a Diagnostics.
My name is Marco
Hi, I am Cindy
Can you please describe to me what the house looks like and what should it normally do?
The house has musical notes and film on it, plus the bottom third of screen is black.
normally I go into windows 7
I dont use the Media Direct at all
so as soon as you start the computer
do you see the dell logo
and then the windows logo?
normally, but not now
ok please describe to me what you see as soon as you turn it on
and then blue screen
can you please turn it off
then turn it on but keep pressing F8
just keep pressing on it
did a black menu come up?
if it didn't then it didn't detect you pressing F8
ok turn it off again
as soon as you start it up KEEP pressing F8
i held the f8 down the entire time
I did not press it repeatedly
try pressing it repeatedly
when I power off, it says exiting windows
yes that's fine
turn it on again
once it's on
let me know
i got the system restart page
ok what are the options
restart or delete restoration
select delete restoration
then let it run
dell media direct building you dell media direct files
let it run
what is on the blue screen?
just my pointer
is there a message?
press ctrl alt and delete together
nothing is happening
do you get a screen come up?
did it twice
so on the keyboard pressing CTRL ALT and Delete all at the same time
do you have two screens or 1 screen?
I am on two laptops
ok now on the dell hold onto the power button until you hear it power off. So just keep holding until it shuts down by itself
so its shut down now
just give it 30 seconds
then turn it back on
media black and white screen
then black screen
now on Welcome to Dell Media Direct
now back to blue screen
still on blank blue screen
still no text?
can you try pressing CTRL ALT and DELETE
what about ALT and TAB together
can you press the CAPS LOCK key
and see if the LED light comes on
yes it did
so the keyboard is working
which delete button are you pressing?
top right corner
is it next to the END key
ok try pressing ALT F4 together
when you took out the battery
did you have the power cable connected?
I disconneted everything
ok please hold onto the power button and keep holding onto it
what operating system are you using on the dell
is it windows 7?
ok F8 should work
do you have an external keyboard that you can plug in
it say window xp is embedded
sorry so the dell is using windows xp embedded?
I guess. I had loaded windows 7 after purchase
I am on the Window Advanced Options menu screen
do you see on the list
select safe mode?
yes select safe mode
cross your fingers
please select the operating system to start: windows xp
i have to use that one don't I
does it have windows 7 on the list?
ok select that one then
I selected it and now I have
A problem has been detected and window has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
is it shutting down?
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
its just stopped
ok what do you see now on the screen?
it has a Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption
can you click on any buttons?
It starts off with:
A problem has been detected and window has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check for viruses
no buttons working
not even caps lock
ok seems like it's stuck
ok hold onto the power button
and turn it off
now turn it back on
and keep pressing F8 again
ok menu screen
select: last known good configuration?
safe mode again
let's see if it happens again
yes, it did it again
ok now try last known good configuration
black and white media direct screen
so same as before
welcome to media direct building your dell media files
now it says:
Dell media direct express cannot access your hard drive , due to BitLocker is enabled. and an exit button
ok press the exit button
ok it shut off
seems like there is an issue accessing the hard drive
because of bitlocker
so now it's shut off?
ok turn it on again and press F8
on the list there will be safe mode with command prompt
same error screen
what is the computer that you're currently using?
is it also a laptop
so there's a few options
at the moment you cannot boot into windows
so you may need to take the hard drive out of the dell
are you comfortable with doing that?
but do you have one of these: http://www.amazon.com/2-5-Inch-Aluminum-External-Enclosure-Silver/dp/B000UTQOEW
you need to take the hard drive and then put it in a USB enclosure
that would be no
so you can connect it to your HP
what is it?
basically it allows you to put in the hard drive from the dell
into it so it can be connected to another computer via USB
so that you can access your files on the hard drive
so is it a cable?
it's a case and a cable
think of it like a shell
inside the shell you will put in the hard drive
dont have it
ok can you restart and press F8 again
on the list do you see Repair your computer?
enable boot logging
enable vga mode
directory services restore mode
disable automatic restart on system failure
start windows normally
safe mode is not on the list?
yes safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt
ok so there's no Repair Your Computer
ok was thinking of performing a recovery
that would be good
but not on this screen
directory services restore mode?
no that won't help
Window domain controllers only
did you install windows 7 on top of windows xp? on the dell?
I just realized... it was Vista not xp
so why is xp embedded?
did you install it?
It came with Vista and I installed Windows 7
I hate Vista
ok that meant the recovery partition to restore the system is gone
do you still have the windows 7 cds?
yes the only option now is to reinstall windows 7
because the existing windows is corrupted and you cannot boot into windows, safe mode
so we are done?
if you have any issues with the reinstall
bye for now
if you can take a minute to rate my services that will be great
