So if I understand correctly you would like to work with Linux from a Windows 8 machine?
If this is the case I suggest you use vmware workstation found here:http://www.vmware.com/products/workstation/
Let me know if I misunderstood the question, or if this satisfies your needs. VMWare workstation can be installed within windows and load an instance of Ubuntu. It is easy to set up and get running.
I have tried to work with VM it not works "VirtualBox" It is possible to take six hours time out I hav an imprtant meeting rigth now.
Vmware is not the same as "virtualbox" I use ubuntu on VMWare daily. Please let me know if you have tried the software I linked too.
I also found this very informative video on how to dualboot your windows 8 machine with ubuntu. But I definitely suggest you use VMWare Workstation that I linked to earlier. Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNCSbTyUzoM
