Does the laptop power on with the power adapter plugged in and the battery out?

the battery is new. it shows two lights out of four on the charge display. when i insert the battery into the laptop the battery charge indicator on the console does not light up. my charger has a green light on it when it is plugged in to 120 vac.

Try powering the laptop on with the charger plugged into the laptop, but with no battery installed.

If it powers on, this could eliminate some variables here.

charger plugged in, console green indicator light ok, battery out, laptop will not power on.

It could be any number of things actually. I can say with complete certainty that because you are receiving a green indicator light when the AC adapter is plugged in that your AC adapter is working properly and is not fried.

You could have a faulty power switch. You could have corroded/fouled contacts between the battery output and the laptop's battery power input. You could have a faulty motherboard!

You're going to have to take the laptop in for service. At this point however, given the age of the laptop, you are most definitely better off replacing the laptop before you set foot in a PC repair shop. The shop will likely charge you at least an hours' labor to diagnose the problem. An hours' labor minus the value of this Presario 1200 (I'm seeing working Presario 1200's going for $50 on eBay) and you'll already be in over your head.

Laptop prices have dropped dramatically. Partially because the market is so saturated, and partially because the manufacturers have clipped out the lengthy 2-3 year comprehensive warranties you used to get with them. Take advantage of this. Get a nice i3 or i5 Intel based laptop, or, hey, Core2Duo laptops like the one I'm using right now can be had for $2.300.

Relist: Other.
I just asked why my Compaq laptop will not turn on. I was answered that I should purchase a new laptop. If I wanted a new or newer laptop I would not have asked a question in the first place. If the question cannot be answered with the information at hand just say so. I would still like a helpfull answer if at all possible.

And I am merely stating that we have exhausted the diagnostic processes that can be completed on a broken laptop remotely, through text chat.

Your laptop will not turn on because (select one, or all, doesn't really matter, there's nothing else we can achieve at this point.)

a.) your power switch is broken
b.) the contacts between the laptop power distributor and the battery are corroded
c.) you have a short circuit
d.) you have an exploded capacitor
e.) your motherboard is fried
f.) your voltage regulators are fried

I could go on...

Point being, there is only so much we can achieve without risking electrocution, or further damage to your laptops components. And without a degree in EE, you're not going to get very far.

Sorry about the bad situation, but I am an I & E technician and I use this laptop to program earlier model PLC's & HMI's that require Microsoft 98se and earlier. A new laptop would be nice, but some of the later models do not have drivers to communicate with later Microsoft OS's.
