Hi I am one of the experts here on Just

A couple question

1) Is your current default printer online/connected?
2) Do you have issues with any other cs 5.5 Programs?

The reason I ask is that a number of people have been reporting a bug found in the CS line since CS3 where if your computers main printer is offline/not connected when you boot up indesign it will crash as it searches for available printers and this causes a bug in the program to go off and crash

Please check this and let me know if it solves your issue
Customer: replied 5 years ago.

I'm afraid that hasn't made a difference. Also, no, I am not having any problems with the other CS5 programmes in the Design Standard Pack.

Thanks for the reply Nick.

Out of curiosity does your mac have other user accounts on it?

I am wondering if it couldn't be an issue with a preference file?

one thing to try would be to setup an account if there isn't one and launch indesign to see if it loads cleanly.

Please try this and let me know

Yes, I set up another account and it seems to work OK. Someone else suggested it may because I am running OS Lion, which has apparently had some problems when running InDesign. Does this sound likely?

How can I stop getting preference issues in the future?

Doesn't sound too likely that its the OS as the changes are not as dramatic though its possible that the Preferences got corrupted in your lion update??

Once you reset the preferences in your user account you should be ok but it can also go corrupt if Indesign doesn't close them correctly causing corruption now when you reset them you would lose your customize menu setups and things of that nature.

One thing I would suggest would be to once you have your menus all setup make a copy of the preference to a location you can always copy them back from.

There are two ways to replace your preferences

1) There is a quick and easy method for doing this using the keyboard: close and relaunch InDesign, and IMMEDIATELY Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift (Mac), and say you want to replace the preferences to the dialog asking if you really want to replace the preferences

2) The second way is to manually do it, now these files are hidden so you will need to set your system to show you hidden files.

InDesign Defaults:

Macintosh: Hard Drive/Users/<USER>/Library/Preferences/Adobe InDesign/<Version #>/<Language>/

InDesign SavedData:

Macintosh: Hard Drive/Users/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/<Version #>/<Language>/

This should fix the issue under your regular account.

Let me know if you need anything else.
