Customer Question

My computer keeps popping up a screen that says;
Windows Installer
The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the 'TrayApp' disk and click OK.
All sorts of these installer windows pop up whenever I try to do anything. This just started overnight.

Hi

Welcome to JustAnswer.com

I am Tech Specialist and today, I will be trying my best to solve your issue.

Are all pop-ups related to "TrayApp" only?
Customer: replied 6 years ago.

No. I get all sorts of them including:

Insert the 'HPProductAssistant' disk and click OK.

Insert the 'BPDSoftware' disk and click OK.

Insert the 'Status' disk and click OK.

Insert the 'MarketResearch' disk and click OK.

Anytime I try to open something like Excel, Quickbooks, Word, or any other program

Something is corrupt. Can you try this:

Click on start(left bottom of the screen) >
Type System Restore in search >
Hit enter.

In system restore choose a date when everything was running fine >
Continue with the restore process >
Computer will restart after a restore.

Note: You will not loose any data or information during a restoration process.

See if that helps, else let me know for further help.
Customer: replied 6 years ago.
I had already tried that. I get The backup drive could not be found. System Restore is looking for restore points on your backup. Make sure the backup drive is on and connected to this computer and then click OK.

Try this way:

Restart the computer >
Press and tap F8 while restarting >
Advanced Options Menu will appear >
Select Repair Your Computer >
Press Enter >
Click Next >
Click System Restore >
Computer will restart after the restore process.

Let me know, if that helps.

Same results as trying to restore before.

Any restore earlier in the day does not work. Any restore point before today I get the same response:

The backup drive could not be found. Make sure the backup drive is on and connected to this computer then click OK.

I still don't have my answer.

Hi, and thanks for using JustAnswer.com.

Please try this: click Start, then type msconfig and press Enter. Then click on the Startup tab and uncheck all the boxes, except your antivirus/security program. Then click on the Services tab and check the box at Hide all Microsoft services near the bottom. Then uncheck all the services, except your antivirus/security program. Then click OK, and restart the computer and check.

If that does not work, click Start, then type services.msc and press Enter. Then open Windows Installer item and at Startup type:, select Disable. Then restart the computer. Then do the same steps again, but at Startup type:, select Manual. Then restart the computer one more time and check.

Please let me know how it goes later.

Thanks,
-Viet

That didn't work. I still get the Windows Installer window whenever I try to open a program. Then if I try to open another program I get an error message saying another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before proceeding with this install.

Please disable windows installer again, then restart, then:

  1. Click Start->All programs->accessories, then right-click on command prompt and click on run as administrator.
  2. and type the following commands and make sure to press Enter after each of them:
  3. cd %windir%\system32
    attrib -r -s -h dllcache
    ren msi.dll msi.old
    ren msiexec.exe msiexec.old
    ren msihnd.dll msihnd.old

If needed: do step one again and type:
  1. type msiexec.exe /unregister and press Enter.
  2. Now type this new command msiexec /regserver and press Enter. (if you run on a 64 bit system, type this command instead: %windir%\Syswow64\Msiexec /regserver)

Also, try these steps with windows installer set to manual.

Thanks,
-Viet
