Viet - Computer Tech :

Hi,

Viet - Computer Tech :

What happens when you've tried to load the recovery disk?

Viet - Computer Tech :

Did you set the startup/boot option from bios/setup menu to set to boot from cd/dvd drive yet?

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

yes but I don't know what to do exactly from there. Once I'm in the 'recovery center' it asks where the recovery info can be found, I point it to the cd drive and it doesn't acknowledge it

Viet - Computer Tech :

That's strange.

Viet - Computer Tech :

What Windows is this?

Viet - Computer Tech :

Where did you get the recovery disk?

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

i read something online that said the OS can't be restored from recovery disks?

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

\Vista

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

Sony

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

they made them

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

2 dvds

Viet - Computer Tech :

You should be able to

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

right, that's the point of them I thought

Viet - Computer Tech :

So you were able to boot from the cd/dvd drive.

Viet - Computer Tech :

but does not work

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

no

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

well, it boots, just does not go into 'recovery'

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

i can get safe mode

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

i can get to the 'recovery center'

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

just can

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

't get it to run with the disks

Viet - Computer Tech :

I thought you have a new hard drive.

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

i do

Viet - Computer Tech :

There is no way to boot from the new hard drive since there is no OS.

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

just installed it today

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

myself

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

i dont know what 'boot' means

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

it starts, I have activity, but i don't get a homepage or anything like that

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

just safe mode

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

and the f2, f8, f10 options (or whatever they are)

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

I am computer literate but not really when it comes to reformatting, safe mode, etc

Viet - Computer Tech :

oh

Viet - Computer Tech :

boot means start from

Viet - Computer Tech :

So you were able to install os with the hard drive installed on this vaio computer?

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

no

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

yes, sorry

Viet - Computer Tech :

Can you try again?

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

the original hard drive had OS and worked fine. laptop fell, hard drive broke. I replaced it, I am trying to load recovery disks and am stuck

Viet - Computer Tech :

You know how to set the boot/startup option from BIOS/Setup menu?

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

no

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

that's where I need help

Viet - Computer Tech :

turn off the computer.

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

its off

Viet - Computer Tech :

Then turn it on and right when you see the Sony/Vaio logo appears, press F1

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

ok

Viet - Computer Tech :

If it does not work, then try again with other keys F2, Del, Esc.

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

says - windows boot manager

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

choose an OS to start, or press tab to select a tool

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

only option to choose is Vaio Recovery Environment

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

also says

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

to specify an advanced option for this choice press f8

Viet - Computer Tech :

try other key

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

?

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

says tab for menu, esc to cancel

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

dont know which other key you mean

Viet - Computer Tech :

turn off the computer

Viet - Computer Tech :

Then turn on, then right when you see the sony/vaio logo appears

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

try f2? f8?

Viet - Computer Tech :

f2

Viet - Computer Tech :

Del

Viet - Computer Tech :

Esc

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

k, go totally different screen

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

got

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

set-up utility

Viet - Computer Tech :

yes, setup utility

Viet - Computer Tech :

now, look around for the Startup/Boot option

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

i see a boot option

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

under advanced there is external drive boot and network boot options too

Viet - Computer Tech :

just set the order

Viet - Computer Tech :

with CD/DVD drive first,

Viet - Computer Tech :

then the hard drive.

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

doesn't say 'cd drive', floppy disk drive is an option

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

1usb optical

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

2internal optical

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

3floppy

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

4usb flash

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

5usb hard disk

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

etc

Viet - Computer Tech :

set internal optical to first

Viet - Computer Tech :

How come you do not have internal hard disk?

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

i do, it is listed as 6, network is 7

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

ok, internal is first

Viet - Computer Tech :

then set internal optical as number 1, then internal hard disk as number 2

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

ok

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

done

Viet - Computer Tech :

now save it.

Viet - Computer Tech :

Save, then exit

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

done

Viet - Computer Tech :

Then see if it can boot/startup from the cd/dvd drive.

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

its restarting now

Viet - Computer Tech :

ok

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

it sent me to system recovery, where I was before, and does not show the drive as having an option to load recovery from

Viet - Computer Tech :

Wait,

Viet - Computer Tech :

Did it ask you to boot from the cd/dvd drive?

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

no, it just restarted, didnt ask anything

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

save and quit, hit enter, and it restarted

Viet - Computer Tech :

Turn off the computer.

Viet - Computer Tech :

Then turn it on.

Viet - Computer Tech :

Then see if it asks.

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

k, its starting up

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

says Windows is loading files, there's a bar at the bottom that is showing the progress and the rest of the screen is black, this is the same thing it did last time

Viet - Computer Tech :

It did not say something like Press any key to boot from cd/dvd ...?

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

nope

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

its back at the system recovery options thing again

Viet - Computer Tech :

It's weird

Viet - Computer Tech :

if you do not have the recovery disk in

Viet - Computer Tech :

then what does it do?

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

dunno, never tried

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

its says on this screen though that if you don not see your OS listed, and I dont, click 'load drivers' for your hard disks

Viet - Computer Tech :

Can you remove the recovery cd/dvd disk?

Viet - Computer Tech :

Then turn off the computer and turn on.

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

ok

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

says OS not found

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

and the screen just has a blinking cursor

Viet - Computer Tech :

Hmm, then the recovery disk does not work.

Viet - Computer Tech :

It maybe bad.

Viet - Computer Tech :

You can contact Sony to get a new recovery disk.

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

i'm pretty sure this is the right one

Viet - Computer Tech :

yes, it's the right one, but it does not work.

Viet - Computer Tech :

When it starts from the disk, which it did, it should just install.

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

convincing them of that is going to be challenging i think

Viet - Computer Tech :

That's the only way

Viet - Computer Tech :

unless there is something wrong with the new hard drive.

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

diagnostic said it was fine'

Viet - Computer Tech :

Then sorry, I think it's the recovery disk

Viet - Computer Tech :

Obviously, you can boot/start from the cd/dvd drive.

Viet - Computer Tech :

but could not install.

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

there's gotta be a way to do it from the recovery center. The disk presents the recovery center, I just don't know how to use it

Viet - Computer Tech :

yes, it should be very easy once you get to the recovery center.

Viet - Computer Tech :

Let me check

Viet - Computer Tech :

What is the exact model of the Vaio?

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

i'm getting error 403

Viet - Computer Tech :

What is the exact model of the Vaio?

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=C1000995&sliceId=3&mdl=VGNSZ780U

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

model pcg-7133L

Viet - Computer Tech :

Did you try?

Viet - Computer Tech :

If an Error 403 message is displayed when attempting to perform a recovery on a new or unpartitioned hard drive, restart the computer to the Recovery disc. Once at the VAIO Recovery Center window, choose Restore Complete System , and then choose Skip . The error will occur when choosing any option other than Restore Complete System .

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

right, i'm trying that now

Viet - Computer Tech :

ok

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

model is vgn nr430e actually

Viet - Computer Tech :

ok, just try first

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

its restarting

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

it switched screens before I could hit skip

Viet - Computer Tech :

hmm,

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

hit skip, says windows cant find a back-up on the hard disk...attach the correct hard disk or insert backup dvd and then start the restore process over again (which I have and it still doesnt work)

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

The Error 403 comes from not answering the CONFUSING recovery program questions properly!!!

Sony has a VERY CONFUSING SCREEN at the next to last step in their Vaio recovery program. You must answer SKIP to this screen if you are recovering to a NEW (UNFORMATTED) HARD DRIVE or the recovery program will give you the 403 error.

The program is perfectly able to format new hard drives and it does this well if you say SKIP on the last step. The recovery program will even allow you to create other partitons on a partitioned drive of a different size from the original. It is a very nice program except for the confusing last screen.

You must leave the SKIP selected on this last screen where the program asks (again, maybe for the third time) if you wish to do hardware checking or recover the C: drive (ONLY). The program does NOT use word ONLY and of course you want to recover the C: drive. BUT if you select the recover C: Drive button, the program looks for a C: partition and not finding in on a new drive gives this ridiculous cryptic Error 403 message.

SUMMARY: For a New Hard Disk Recovery with the Sony Recovery DVD's, do a complete restore, and leave the SKIP button selected on the last screen when asked if you want to recover the C: Drive.

Viet - Computer Tech :

Well, can you use a USB hard drive adapter to format the hard drive first?

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

dont know how to

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

got it

Viet - Computer Tech :

Bring the new hard drive to your local computer store.

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

its formatting

Viet - Computer Tech :

Then buy the correct usb hard drive adapter

Viet - Computer Tech :

oh ok

Viet - Computer Tech :

great

Viet - Computer Tech :

was there option to do quick format?

Viet - Computer Tech :

full format takes very long

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

just like that post said, for some unknown reason you have to hit skip on that last screen

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

ok, i may just leave it and go to bed, check back in a few hours

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

yep, seems to be working

Viet - Computer Tech :

great

Viet - Computer Tech :

I don't know why sony make this hard

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

me either

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

hopefully this works though

Viet - Computer Tech :

I hope so too.

Viet - Computer Tech :

Is it formatting?

Viet - Computer Tech :

still formatting?

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

yep, 18% done

Viet - Computer Tech :

ok, you can go and check tomorrow

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

will do, thanks for the help, appreciate it

Viet - Computer Tech :

You're welcome!

Viet - Computer Tech :

Let me know the result tomorrow.

Viet - Computer Tech :

Have a good night!

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

will do

JACUSTOMER-1681v7yq- :

you too

Viet - Computer Tech :

Thank you.
