Please try this:

  1. Move your mouse cursor right to the bottom of the screen until the taskbar appears.

  2. Right-click on the taskbar and select "Properties" from the context menu. The "Taskbar and Start menu Properties" window should open.

  3. With the "Taskbar" tab open, UNCHECK the box labelled "Auto-hide the taskbar".

  4. Make sure there is a check in the box labelled "Keep the taskbar on top of other windows".

  5. Click "OK" to save the changes and exit the properties window.

I tried but no task bar appears but if I stay down there & right click a box comes up with arrange icons by & the last option in box is properties -- if I click on properties there then a box appears that says display properties

Does pressing the windows key logo on your keyboard (in the bottom left, looks like a wavy windows sign) bring up the start menu? If so, right an empty part of the start menu and select properties. Then uncheck auto-hide the taskbar and lock the task bar. You may need to then click and drag the taskbar back into place. Please try that and let me know (or if the button doesn't bring up anything let me know as well, thanks for your patience).

You can actually do a system restore to when the computer showed the start menu and task bar.

Can you tell me what operating system you have? (Windows 7, Vista, XP)? Thank you for your patience.

It looks like your account profile is corrupted. Let's try this: turn off your computer. Then turn on and right after the first screen comes up and disappears, keep pressing & releasing the key F8 until you get a menu and select Safe Mode. Then login the Administrator account, then go to Start->Control Panel->User Accounts->Manage another account and create a new account and check.
