My dell inspiron 9200 cpu core clock will not go above 598…

Customer Question
My dell inspiron 9200 cpu...
My dell inspiron 9200 cpu core clock will not go above 598 Mhz, even under load. How do I fix this? I know it has the ability to run at 1.6 Ghz. When I hit the Fn key with Z, it speeds up for 3 seconds, then drops back down.

What is the CPU clock speed program you have been using to monitor the CPU?

What is the exact model of the CPU you are using with this Dell?

Intel (R) Pentium (R) M, 1.60 Ghz

589 Mhz, running 2 gigs of RAM

Ok seems like this is a common issue with Dell computers using this model CPU.

There is a download from Dell which fixes the issue. It can be found here: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R56673&System ID=LAT_PNT_PM_D600&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=4669&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=0&libid=7&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=67673

Click on the blue Download button to start the download and then choose Run to install the patch after downloading. You may need to restart after installing the patch.

Let me know the results.

I am required to post this as an answer, but please only click on Accept Answer if this allows your CPU to run at the desired speed. Otherwise, please do not click on Accept Answer and post back here so we can find a better solution.

I download ed it, and went to install it, and it won't install.

"Speedstep Fix for WinXP setup failed"

"This is not a supported system"

"Set up cannot complete"

Are we sure the Inspiron 9200 was on this list for this particular patch?

Tech Support Specialist: Tom K, Information Systems Manager replied 8 years ago

Sorry about that, I gave you the wrong download file. I am trying to track down the correct file, give this one a try: http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R58935&formatcnt=0&libid=0&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=71655

Let me know the result. I'll let you know if I find the exact file.

Same result. I also tried the version A02, which installed, but did nothing to help my problem.

Try this BIOS update for your laptop model here: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en& amp;s=dhs&releaseid=R93239&SystemID=INS_PNT_P4_9200&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=8164&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=2&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=0&libid=1&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&source=-1&fileid=121357

This might be able to set the SpeedStep setting to show the full speed of the CPU.

Let me know the result.

I just tried the BIOS update (actually an older version), still nothing. .60ghz unless I hit Fn key along with Z, then jumps up to 1.59 Ghz for a few seconds, and drops back down. It will not go up even if I run multiple programs.
Tech Support Specialist: Tom K, Information Systems Manager replied 8 years ago
Is the SpeedStep option turned off in the BIOS settings?
Ask Your Own Computer Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago
I don't remember. I remember checking that at some point, but off the top of head don't remember how to access it. F2 on the startup?
Customer reply replied 8 years ago

I just checked, and the Speedstep option is enabled.

Tech Support Specialist: Tom K, Information Systems Manager replied 8 years ago
If you disable speedstep from within the BIOS, does the CPU clock change at all?
Ask Your Own Computer Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago

I disabled speedstep within the BIOS, and the bootup seemed slower, but maybe that was reconfiguring. Once running, it would still max out at .60Ghz, not 1.6Ghz, and if I hit the Fn key with Z, it no longer jumped up in speed. It stays maxed out at .60Ghz.

It seems that the job that speedstep is supposed to do automatically when enabled, it does not do. My system has the ability to run at it's max (Fn + Z) has proved that, but it will not automatically step up when it needs it, so the problem, I feel, is with the speedstep. ??????????????????

Tom's offline right now. Please accept his answer if this works. Just want you to try a simple step real quick.

Renable speed step.

Go into windows, go to control panel, select power options. Change the profile to Desktop/Always on and/or high performance, instead of laptop or battery saver.

Check the speed of the processor, it should be instantaneous.

When I tried that, it still had the same speed when under load. I did all 3 option, same result.

I just came back from Vacation to find out that my this site says my problem is resolved. My problem is not resolved, and I was charged. My last reply was July 2nd, 9:24 am. I never got a response from you guys, and then I saw my status as resolved. Can we revisit the same problem that was never solved?

Thanks

Tech Support Specialist: Justin, Network Administrator/Not Limited replied 8 years ago
The charge you received was a deposit and is refundable. An answer has to be accepted.

You changed the power profiles though and speed step and the speed is not at max?

You can go further into the options inside the power profile to confirm. If you still want to work on this just update as needed and I'm sure Tom will check it out.

Hi John, Thank you for your expertise and, more important, for your kindness because they make me, almost, look forward to my next computer problem. After the next problem comes, I'll be delighted to correspond again with you. I'm told that I excel at programing. But system administration has never been one of my talents. So it's great to have an expert to rely on when the computer decides to stump me. God bless, Bill
