Hello, I will be happy to continue assistance with your question. .

Maxtor external drives, regardless of HOW they connect, basically function exactly like USB thumb drives. You plug then in through a USB port, or firewire, or external SATA, they show up, and you can browse them.

If you are search for specific files on that drive, you can do just that. Run a search. If you know the name of the files, it would be easier.

However, there is another factor. If you used this drive as a target backup drive, it is possible that these files would not be accessible until after you ran a restore using the same backup utility. A lot of backup utilities create an archive or a single file that contains all the data that you tagged to be backed up. If this is the case, the restore process should be relatively simple.

I will be available all day today, and I am versed in a great many different types of backup utilities. So if you need assistance restoring the data, please let me know.

Hi John, Thank you for your expertise and, more important, for your kindness because they make me, almost, look forward to my next computer problem. After the next problem comes, I'll be delighted to correspond again with you. I'm told that I excel at programing. But system administration has never been one of my talents. So it's great to have an expert to rely on when the computer decides to stump me. God bless, Bill
