I'm running office 2003. I had a hard drive crash and lost all my email including addresses. I use Carbonite and have backed up all my files, but I can't find any email files, including archived ones. I really just need to pull up the archived files, or the sent files, or my address book. Any help.

emails and contacts are held in a .pst database file. You should be able to find it here: C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.pst

Find that in carbonite and then save it to your computer. Then you'll need to point to it in outlook. Here's directions for that: http://www.slipstick.com/config/defaultpst.htm

I cannot locate that file. I also searched for any files with PST, and came back empty.

Any other ideas?

Customer reply replied 8 years ago

do you have any other ideas or do I have to just sit here?

Sorry, the pst is the only file that holds your emails. If it isn't there then I fear you weren't backing it up. What did you have set to back up? Was it the default docs and desktop? Or did you change it to be the entire c drive? If you just let Carbonite choose what to back up then your emails were not being backed up because they don't back up emails by default.

depending on what it is worth to you there are companies that can recover data off a crashed hard drive. it can get expensive though. usually a hundred dollars or more as a minimum

put data recovery services into google or any search engine you will find a dozen of them i am not able to recomend one over another.

thanks....I'm done. Need no more responses.

Tech Support Specialist: Robert M., Consultant replied 8 years ago

sorry wish we could have helped more but if the email wasnt backed up there is no other way to get to it then the original hard drive

there is one other possibility

if you were using outlook EXPRESS rather than outlook

the files will have dbx extension or wab for the address book rather than pst.

try doing a search for those in the backup.

Hi John, Thank you for your expertise and, more important, for your kindness because they make me, almost, look forward to my next computer problem. After the next problem comes, I'll be delighted to correspond again with you. I'm told that I excel at programing. But system administration has never been one of my talents. So it's great to have an expert to rely on when the computer decides to stump me. God bless, Bill
