Christopher Bessler :

Hello.

Christopher Bessler :

I will be happy to assist you with your question.

Customer:

Thanks

Christopher Bessler :

Now, what is the current state of your system?

Christopher Bessler :

I MS Student Teacher Edition currently installed?

Customer:

All programs appear to be operating normally with the exception of my Microsoft Office program

Christopher Bessler :

What error are you seeing? And when are you seeing it?

Customer:

Currently it does not show up in my programs

Christopher Bessler :

Did it ever show up?

Customer:

I get the 1402 HKEY Error, when I attempt to reinstall microsoft office

Christopher Bessler :

Did the Office Program set ever show up in your list?

Christopher Bessler :

If so, when did it stop?

Customer:

No

Christopher Bessler :

So, to be clear, you are not RE-installing Office, you are trying to install it for the first time?

Christopher Bessler :

And it keeps failing?

Customer:

Sorry, it was installed previously, I encountered a Windows Security tool malware infestation, and utilized Eusing Registry Cleaner to completely get rid of the Malware. My problems started after that.

Christopher Bessler :

Ah. OK. That makes sense. What version of Windows are you using?

Customer:

Windows XP Home Edition

Christopher Bessler :

Have you ever edited the registry?

Customer:

No

Customer:

Have read about it some

Christopher Bessler :

OK, let's try looking through it, but NOT making any changes.

Customer:

Ok

Christopher Bessler :

Go to the Start button, and in the run field, type regedit

Christopher Bessler :

This will bring up the registry editor

Customer:

Done

Christopher Bessler :

Then expand (click on the small Plus (+) sign) next to HKEY_Local_Machine

Christopher Bessler :

Then expand Software

Christopher Bessler :

Then Microsoft

Customer:

ok

Christopher Bessler :

The Windows

Customer:

Ok

Christopher Bessler :

Then CUrrent Version

Christopher Bessler :

The Run

Christopher Bessler :

And tell me if you see MSFS there

Customer:

Under current version all i see is Internet Explorer

Christopher Bessler :

OK, this is a well documented problem

Christopher Bessler :

Give me a moment, I am looking something up

Christopher Bessler :

What EXACTLY does the error say, in its entirety?

Customer:

Error 1402, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\RUN\OPTIONAL COMPONENTS\MSFS

Christopher Bessler :

OK, this is going to be kind of involved, so bear with me.

Christopher Bessler :

First, we are going to make a backup of your registry, for safety's sake

Christopher Bessler :

And I also want to make sure, the account you are using has administor rights on your compute,r correct?

Customer:

I re did the steps above and under run I see folders Auto runs disabled and Optional components.

Customer:

I may have to reboot to get to the administrator side of my laptop

Christopher Bessler :

If you click on the RUN folder, what appears in the right hand side?

Christopher Bessler :

Also, if you are not in the computer as an administrator, that might be why the install is failing.

Customer:

about 16 line items

Christopher Bessler :

Do you see MSFS?

Customer:

no

Christopher Bessler :

OK

Christopher Bessler :

First, bookmark this page:

Christopher Bessler :

http://www.justanswer.com/questions/3o2p1-i-get-an-error-1402-hkey-local-machine-software-microsoft-windows-current

Christopher Bessler :

Then, you need to make sure that you are in your computer as an administrator

Christopher Bessler :

You can check this by looking at your account settings through the control panel

Customer:

is it F6 button I push on reboot

Christopher Bessler :

That is only to go into safe mode and get the local administrator account, and it is F8

Christopher Bessler :

However, go to Start > Control Panels FIRST

Christopher Bessler :

And look at the Users control panel

Christopher Bessler :

Take a look at your account and make sure it is a Computer Administrator

Customer:

Sorry already rebooted waiting for it to come back up.

Christopher Bessler :

OK

Christopher Bessler :

Let me know when

Customer:

Ok have control panel up, where do I go from there to switch to admin

Christopher Bessler :

Look for Users

Christopher Bessler :

It should be pretty self explanatory from there

Christopher Bessler :

There are a couple of links and radio buttons to make sure users are limited or computer administrators

Christopher Bessler :

Are you logged in as the local administrator account right now?

Christopher Bessler :

If you are, try running the installation.

Customer:

yes

Customer:

Running install

Christopher Bessler :

Try running the install and let me know if you get the same error.

Christopher Bessler :

OK

Christopher Bessler :

If it does not error out and completes successfully, I know what the problem is.

Customer:

Same error, when writing system registry values during the install

Christopher Bessler :

OK

Christopher Bessler :

You will need to follow this process, but as I said, it is involved

Customer:

ok

Christopher Bessler :

First, do the backup from regedit.

Christopher Bessler :

Go to start > run and type regedit

Christopher Bessler :

  1. In the Registry Editor dialog box, choose File > Export.

  2. Type a name for the file and choose the location.

  3. For Export Range, choose All.

  4. Click Save.

Christopher Bessler :

Let me know when you are done

Customer:

OK

Christopher Bessler :

Navigate to the parent of the key referenced in the error message. Here, go to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\RUN

Christopher Bessler :

But STOP at Run

Christopher Bessler :

Do not go any further down

Christopher Bessler :

Let me know when you are there

Customer:

OK there

Christopher Bessler :

Right-click on the parent key and select Permissions

Christopher Bessler :

Verify that the Administrators and SYSTEM is present and that Full Control is selected under the Allow column.

Christopher Bessler :

The parent key is the RUN folder

Customer:

Right click on run right

Customer:

OK

Christopher Bessler :

Right click on the RUN folder on the left side

Customer:

OK

Christopher Bessler :

Click the Add button

Customer:

ok

Christopher Bessler :

Then type the word everyone

Christopher Bessler :

Then click check names

Christopher Bessler :

Then click OK

Christopher Bessler :

Let me know when you are done

Customer:

in the object names box

Christopher Bessler :

Yes

Christopher Bessler :

In that box, type the word

Christopher Bessler :

everyone

Customer:

ok

Christopher Bessler :

Now, back in this window:

Christopher Bessler :

Christopher Bessler :

Click once on the everyone group

Christopher Bessler :

And make sure 'Full rights' is checked in the lower box

Customer:

OK

Christopher Bessler :

In the Permissions dialog box (same box), click Advanced.

Customer:

Read is also checked

Christopher Bessler :

No problem

Christopher Bessler :

Full control is the important one

Customer:

ok

Christopher Bessler :

Read, Write, and Execute

Christopher Bessler :

Select the Administrators group (1), check "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" (2), click Apply (3), and select the Permissions tab (4).
Note: Select the current administrator account if the Administrators group is unavailable.

Christopher Bessler :

After you click advanced

Christopher Bessler :

Do that last part

Christopher Bessler :

Select the Administrators group (1), check "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" (2), click Apply (3), and select the Permissions tab (4).

Christopher Bessler :

Let me know when you are done

Christopher Bessler :

You then need to click Apply

Christopher Bessler :

You will likely get a warning

Customer:

On the permissions tab I do not see Administrator group, just Everyone

Christopher Bessler :

OK, click the everyone group

Christopher Bessler :

That actually makes it easier

Christopher Bessler :

And do the same thing, but for the everyone group

Christopher Bessler :

Let me know when you would like to continue

Christopher Bessler :

I will post the remainder of the process for you.

Christopher Bessler :

Select "Reset permissions on all child objects and enable propagation of inheritable permissions" (1) and click OK (2).

Christopher Bessler :

If you receive a message indicating that some child objects could not be modified during steps 8 or 9, Click OK until all dialog boxes are closed, then repeat those two steps.

Christopher Bessler :

Click OK in the "Advanced Security Settings" dialog box. Windows will now reset the permissions for each child object to correspond with its parent.

Christopher Bessler :

Close the box

Christopher Bessler :

Close Regedit

Christopher Bessler :

Reboot the computer

Christopher Bessler :

When it comes back up you should be able to run the installation without getting that error

Hi John, Thank you for your expertise and, more important, for your kindness because they make me, almost, look forward to my next computer problem. After the next problem comes, I'll be delighted to correspond again with you. I'm told that I excel at programing. But system administration has never been one of my talents. So it's great to have an expert to rely on when the computer decides to stump me. God bless, Bill
