Yesterday, 24th, I changed ISP...
Yesterday, 24th, I changed ISP to btinternet and after several sessions, each generating several XP updates, I tried to close down my IBM Thinkpad but after 30mins quote 'installing 2 of 2 updates, the machine was fixed in a perminant loop without any disk activity. I eventually forced it to close down by holding the power putton as per IBM manual.

On restarting I received a window headed Norton Anti Virus reporting : Malicious script detected, Object File System Object, File MsiExec.exe. The system suggested stopping its execution which I did. However I am now getting a Microsoft warning to check my software is genuine - which it is and has been registed since the Thinkpad was purchased from a well known supplier in Jan 2005 with XP pre-installed (no disks).

I am not adept at software what should I do?

This is all a bit new to me (obviously!) - you say you have sent me a answer but I don't know where it is. Help me please.

My first suggestion would be to go directly to Windows Update.

Install and high or critical updates you can find.

Next, go here:

http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/windows-xp-service-pack-3.html

Download the service pack and reinstall it.

Then, go BACK to Windows Update and install all high and critical updates.

Let me know if you are still getting the genuine error.

Thanks for your help. Sorry to be such a hopeless case. I will try doing what you suggest but it may take more than a week because I have to leave home on urgent family business.tonight.
