D.Sandlin :

Welcome to JustAnswer..

My name is XXXXX XXXXX I am a member of the expert community here..

D.Sandlin :

how long ago did this happen?? that the folders dissapeared?

Customer:

The folders disappeared when Bev opened her express last night. Just gone....

D.Sandlin :

just now seen your message..

D.Sandlin :

ok.. you said you restored the .bak files from the recycled bin?

D.Sandlin :

describe to me what you did. because those files were probably the folder structure..

Customer:

I restored some .bak files then realized i was probably blundering and so stopped. There a large number of them there- I restored three, one of which was the Nortonanti spam folder.

D.Sandlin :

ok.. do you still have any bak files in the recycle bin.?

Customer:

there a lot of them there, yes. I should restore them all?

D.Sandlin :

not yet.. theres a process we need to take.

D.Sandlin :

The fact they are there is a good sign.. first.

D.Sandlin :

click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.

On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.

.
Click the View tab.

Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.

D.Sandlin :

let me know when this is done.. And if you get stuck.. also.. let me know

Customer:

o k.

D.Sandlin :

ok its done? or ok your getting started?

Customer:

OK I did that. Nothing new in Outlook Express, but I do see a whole pile of .bak stuff which looks familiar in the recycle bin.

D.Sandlin :

thanks.. that procedure was just so we could see some hidden files and folders..

D.Sandlin :

now

Customer:

Now??

D.Sandlin :

sorry.. last message must not have taken

D.Sandlin :

next thing to do is..

D.Sandlin :

the back files..

D.Sandlin :

in the recycle bin. we dont want to restore them yet..

D.Sandlin :

but do any of the names.. match the old names of some of the missing folders she had?

D.Sandlin :

such as saved.bak

D.Sandlin :

Which would be the saved mail folder..

Customer:

Yes. Quite a few of them match the mssing sub directories.

D.Sandlin :

ok.. the ones that match the sub directories..

D.Sandlin :

i want you to go into outlook

D.Sandlin :

and recreate the folder structure..

D.Sandlin :

using the exact same names as the subdirectories you have in the trash bin.

D.Sandlin :

you dont have to add the bak

D.Sandlin :

but make sure the name is XXXXX XXXXX once you have recreated the structure..

D.Sandlin :

then.. we will try to restore the bak files..

Customer:

can do that. and will. I will step aside for a few minutes to eat my dinner, if that is OK by you. Back in fifteen.

D.Sandlin :

let me know if you have any questions about re creating the folder structure.

Customer:

will do.

D.Sandlin :

sure.. no problem..

Customer:

Okay, I am back, fed, the directories are created, what next?

Customer:

Is this where we sacrifice the chicken and its insides will tell us how Microsoft let this happen?

D.Sandlin :

haha. just seen your replies..

D.Sandlin :

Stepped away for a minute myself ..

D.Sandlin :

the directories are created.. ok.

D.Sandlin :

restore all the matching bak files..

D.Sandlin :

then.. once they are restored.. we have one more step

D.Sandlin :

open outlook.. go to

D.Sandlin :

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder... once you find the store folder i want you to highlight the location . and press control c to copy it

D.Sandlin :

then.. click start, click run

D.Sandlin :

and paste the store folder location into the run box.. and hit enter..

D.Sandlin :

then..

D.Sandlin :

it should open a window showing the folders.. see all the ones named .bak?

D.Sandlin :

i want you to rename each of the .bak into .dbx

D.Sandlin :

leave the main name the same.. just change the ending.

D.Sandlin :

once all that has been done.. close the folder.. and then re open outlook.

D.Sandlin :

check your mail folders now. everything should be back to normal

Customer:

A slight problem..I already have a lot of files that match with .dbx extensions- yet in outlook the olders I created are there, but they are all empty..((??!!))

D.Sandlin :

they are supposed to be empty.. ok..

D.Sandlin :

the problem your having.. here is what we do.. right now.. you should have matching pairs right?

Customer:

Oh good!

Customer:

Yep.

D.Sandlin :

for instance.. you have folder A.bak

D.Sandlin :

and you have a matching folder A.dbx right?

Customer:

and an A.dbx...yep

D.Sandlin :

*(folder a being a generic neme0

Customer:

right on

D.Sandlin :

[email protected]

Customer:

gotcha

D.Sandlin :

ok.. One matching pair at a time..

D.Sandlin :

with outlook program closed.

D.Sandlin :

take A dbx.. and rename it to A.old

D.Sandlin :

do not open outlook.

D.Sandlin :

because now. were gonna thread the bak in there

D.Sandlin :

to do so.. now rename folder A.bak

D.Sandlin :

to folder A.dbx

Customer:

OK...back soon..there's a pile of em!

Customer:

gotta love this hands across the border stuff..

D.Sandlin :

ok.. just make sure your methodical.. and do each pair one at a time..

Customer:

All done there..yes was methodical...all the .dbx are now .old!

D.Sandlin :

excellent..

D.Sandlin :

cross your fingers.. and open outlook..

D.Sandlin :

let me know if anything is as it should be..

Customer:

ha! is that 'cross your fingers" a specific microsoft procedure along with "bogu"?

D.Sandlin :

pretty much.. all the best microsoft tech s use it at least a few times an hour

D.Sandlin :

were not allowed to distrivute that information to the public though.

Customer:

well...da nada...we have none of my new folders, and no mail of any kind...

D.Sandlin :

thats unfortunate..

D.Sandlin :

hmm... not sure if this will work.. but its worth a shot..

D.Sandlin :

lets system restore.

D.Sandlin :

to do so.. click start.. all programs, accessories.. system tools, system restore..

D.Sandlin :

choose a date that was at least 1 day before the issue started..

D.Sandlin :

this will cause the compuiter to restart.. so you may need to save this link first to get back to me

D.Sandlin :

http://www.justanswer.com/questions/3nyje-my-wife-had-a-large-group-of-sub-folders-under-inbox-in-outlook

Customer:

okay...system is shutting down..it takes a while. Will use the link to get back to you.

D.Sandlin :

ok.. will be standing by

Customer:

Well, the system restore for June 22, the day before everything disappeared, was unable to restore. I have gone back to a "checkpoint" on June 18th and we shall see....

D.Sandlin :

ok..

Customer:

that did not work either. Still trying. I think this may be a SNAFU.

D.Sandlin :

ok.. question..

D.Sandlin :

if you look in the recycle bin right now.. can you tell me if you see any bak files?

Customer:

wait one...

Customer:

Yes. Lots of .bak files...again...

D.Sandlin :

sorry.. for some reason this never updated..

D.Sandlin :

i decided to refresh the page and there you were..

D.Sandlin :

ok.. instead of doing all the back files at once..

D.Sandlin :

Id like to do them one set at a time..

D.Sandlin :

do you have an inbox.bak file?

D.Sandlin :

if so.. i want you to restore it alone..

D.Sandlin :

then.. find the inbox.dbx rename it to old.

D.Sandlin :

then rename the inbox.bak to inbox.dbx

D.Sandlin :

after that open outlook.. then.. let me know what happens. do we have an inbox now?

Customer:

ok..have restored the .bak file from the recycle bin, now am searching for the .dbx files.

D.Sandlin :

ok..

Customer:

cannot find any ,dbx files.

D.Sandlin :

ok..

D.Sandlin :

we need to do this again

D.Sandlin :

click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.

On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options.

.

Click the View tab.

.

Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.

D.Sandlin :

that help show any dbx files/.

Customer:

yep..ran through that and have the directory with those folders in it- the one I found earlier in maintenance in express, then did my start- run thing.

D.Sandlin :

so .. you found em.. or not found em?

Customer:

YES WE DO!!!! We have an INBOX.. I guess I get to do that with all the folders- (1) restore the folder in the recycle, (2) rename the folder in express from dbx to old and old to dbx???

Customer:

Nice work, Dustin!

D.Sandlin :

yes..

D.Sandlin :

unfortunately.. theres no easy way to do it

Customer:

Oh, and close Express when I do that....

D.Sandlin :

you have to manually do so.. but.. i can tell you why it happened.

D.Sandlin :

so you can know how to stop it

D.Sandlin :

outlook compacts folders from time to time..

D.Sandlin :

compacting folders is bad.

Customer:

PLease do, o guiding light!

D.Sandlin :

it takes your mail and spits it out into the trashcan.

D.Sandlin :

its supposed to help you keep your inbox to a workig size..

D.Sandlin :

my recomendation is this.

D.Sandlin :

when your inbox starts to grow too large.

D.Sandlin :

remember how we renamed the folders to dbx..

D.Sandlin :

we can make our very own backup files.

D.Sandlin :

so lets say, folder tree 2 sub folder one is too big

D.Sandlin :

the find sub folder one dbx and rename it to..

D.Sandlin :

sub folder one *todays date* . old

D.Sandlin :

then.. what just happened is we pulled those emails out of service.

D.Sandlin :

now you save the subfolder one .old

D.Sandlin :

onto a cd , or a usb disk

D.Sandlin :

and now you have a permanent saved copy of the email..

D.Sandlin :

if you wnat to access it

D.Sandlin :

you re add it

D.Sandlin :

and change it back to dbx.

D.Sandlin :

does that make sense?

Customer:

makes sense.. explains why you should not accept a job at Microsoft--once they are done it will be worse than the army...

D.Sandlin :

lol..

D.Sandlin :

I hear ya..

D.Sandlin :

i dont understand the crazy difficulty they built into the mail systenm with outlook, outlook express, and windows mail

Customer:

Thank you..before I go, from an old Canadian Army reserve armoured captain to you, well done!!

Customer:

Every success in the future!

D.Sandlin :

Thank you as well..

D.Sandlin :

from an ex us army paratrooper..

D.Sandlin :

Thank you.. Best wishees and godspeed.

Customer:

And now I will click the button-~!

D.Sandlin :

if you ever need anything else. you know where to find me!!

Customer:

I do..before I go I am going to copy this all out and save it. At 61 I isn't as quick as I used to be, way back then in DOS...

Customer:

Got it copied..Good Night, God Bless, and Be safe on the 4th if you are travelling.

Customer:

Patrick

D.Sandlin :

Thanks Patrick..

Hi John, Thank you for your expertise and, more important, for your kindness because they make me, almost, look forward to my next computer problem. After the next problem comes, I'll be delighted to correspond again with you. I'm told that I excel at programing. But system administration has never been one of my talents. So it's great to have an expert to rely on when the computer decides to stump me. God bless, Bill
