I took a look through your other conversation, and if you would like I will try to assist.

Have you tried pinging the outgoing mail server?
Are you certain you are using the correct login credentials?
Does this work through the website?
Ask Your Own Computer Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago
Very happy to have you assist.

What do you mean by "pinging" ?

I am the only user on this computer -- so I am logged in.

Through what website ?
Tech Support Specialist: Christopher Bessler, Director of Computer Engineering replied 8 years ago
Well, I want you to make sure that your computer can see the mail server at all.

Go to start, run and type cmd

Then type:

ping smtp.comcast.net

Let me know what is returned.
Ask Your Own Computer Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago
After cmd, pressed OK

Then entered in black box ping, etc.

It said pinging smtp_g_comcast.net [76.96.30.117] with 32 bytes of data: request timed out.

Underneath said:

ping statistics for 76.96.30.117:

packets: sent = 4, received = 0 lost = 4 (100% loss).
Customer reply replied 8 years ago
Judging by the time elapsed since our last reply, you must be having problems.

Before my daughter installed Thunderbird 3 (at JustAnswer's suggestion), she had an earlier version of Thunderbird.

If she now restores to a date when the earlier Thunderbird was working, might it fix the settings on the Thunderbird 3 now installed and solve the problem?
Tech Support Specialist: Christopher Bessler, Director of Computer Engineering replied 8 years ago
Sorry about that. I was offline for a bit.

First, your response said that you were pinging smtp_g_comcast.net

You are supposed to be attempting to ping smtp.comcast.net

Is there a problem with that? Does it error out or something?
Ask Your Own Computer Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago
Tried again.

Same up-top message.

Then, below, said:

"Request timed out"
Tech Support Specialist: Christopher Bessler, Director of Computer Engineering replied 8 years ago

OK, now, from that same window, type:

ipconfig

And let me know what is returned.

OK, herein lies the problem.

You can get to certain sites like Yahoo without a problem. But if you can't ping it, you can't see it. You can't ping SMTP.comcast.net, therefore there is no way you will be able to connect to it for email processing.

Are you at home? Work? There is something blocking this site...

Chloe is at home. Don't know what is blicking it. Could it be vjrus defense.

If so, how to unblock ?
Tech Support Specialist: Christopher Bessler, Director of Computer Engineering replied 8 years ago

There are a lot of possibilities.

Windows Firewall.

Virus Program

Network firewall

ISP

Do you have the Windows Firewall enabled? (Control panels)

How to disable ?
Tech Support Specialist: Christopher Bessler, Director of Computer Engineering replied 8 years ago
The firewall is easy. Go into the control panel and just turn it off. Security Center, open it up and there should be a disable selection. Or (depending on the version) you might be able to right click on the icon in the lower right hand corner and select Disable.

OK, your computer is not able to hit or see the outgoing mail server for your account.

As a result, there is no way that Outlook will be able to function properly.

You can go through and disable all possible causes on your local computer, AVG could be another one.

However, the likely cause is that there is a network issue between your computer and the mail server that is blocking the connection. And the reality is, it will probably be Comcast that has to resolve this.

Attempt to disable AVG, just in case, but after that the next step is contacting Comcast and giving them the results of the ping test.

If you tell them that you cannot even ping the smtp.comcast.net server they will know where to begin on their end.

Let me know...

Comcast says it does not deal through Thunderbird
Tech Support Specialist: Christopher Bessler, Director of Computer Engineering replied 8 years ago
I take it you have already tried this: From the Thunderbird knowledge base?

Comcast's instructions state you should leave both "use secure authentication" and "use secure connection (SSL)" unchecked when configuring the POP account. Some users have enabled "secure authentication" and gotten it to sporadicly work. The SSL support seems to be reliable. Its recommended you use a secure connection (SSL) rather than secure authentication if you don't want to send the password XXXXX the clear when logging into the POP server.
Comcast documents two SMTP configurations, a unsecure connection using port 25 and a secure connection using "TLS if available" and port 587. If you get a error message that the SMTP server may be unavailable or refusing SMTP connections there is a undocumented configuration that several users have gotten to work. Use port 465 , set "use secure connection" to SSL, check the authentication required box and provide your full Comcast address as the username.
The Comcast spam filters limit messages to Comcast addresses to six recipients per second. This may occasionally cause new mail to you to be bounced, or prevent you from sending a message. When this problem occurs the sender will get a 4xx error message (temporary failure) and a link for instructions on how to solve the problem. [1]

That long technobabble paragraph doesn't help. We'll call Comcast tomorrow and try again.

We seem to have had enough for tonight.

Thanks anyway for your effort, but the problem is not fixed.
Tech Support Specialist: Christopher Bessler, Director of Computer Engineering replied 8 years ago
Sorry, those are the instructions from the Thunderbird website for Comcast support.

Basically it means that you have to set up Thunderbird differently for Comcast and try different connection ports. I wouldn't exactly call it technobabble, as it gives clear instructions on what ports to try with which settings.

Let me know if ports 25, 587, and 465 do not work at all.
