Hi there, and welcome to JustAnswer

Which version of word are you using?

Customer: replied 8 years ago.
Word 2003

Can you do the following please

First, open the document and do a "Save As..." specifying Rich Text Format (RTF). It'll end up being called something.rtf.

Now open the RTF file by double-clicking on it. It should look identical to the original Word file.

Final step: save the RTF file with a new name as a Microsoft Word format document.

The password XXXXX then be gone, let me know if it isnt please

Customer: replied 8 years ago.
I cannot open the document as it is encrypted. When I download I get the opportunity to save but the computer saves it as an encrypted file. There is not an opportunity to specify 'save as' or to select Rich Text

ok then you will need to purchase a tool to do this.

A Demo is available on the below link and will show some of the characters (this may be enough to determine the password) else the full version will be required
