Customer Question
I have a home build...
I have a home build gaming computer about 1.5 yrs old w/ a Sony DVD-RW DRU-840A that has worked great until this last week.

All of a sudden it doesn't want to work.

At first, the computer didn't even recognize that it was still there.

Now it shows up in My Computer (win XP), but the drive won't open.
The front LED is SOLID GREEN, non-stop.

it is IDE running as master w/ a slave HD.

I have opened drive bay manually thru little hole and inserted original sony disc that came with the drive, to no avail.

only other things.. I moved recently and I played Civ IV after the move with a still working drive. It has not worked since I played Civ IV. I had to manually remove the civ disc.

any suggestions????

Hello. Welcome to JustAnswer.

In short, the DVD drive is done. Based on the symptoms you have given (the LED blinking non stop), the laser lens sounds as if it has been burnt out.

If you have a warranty, I would suggests contacting Sony for a warranty repair or if you got it from a place like Best Buy and have a warranty protection plan, cash it in.

If not, well, you will just need to replace the drive.

There is no software, registry fix, etc that will correct this issue. The drive has just reached its end of life.

Good luck.

LED is solid, not blinking... change any thoughts?
Tech Support Specialist: Mr. Clark, Computer Engineer replied 8 years ago
Okay, complete solid does change things slightly.

Have you tried setting the HDD to CS and the DVD drive to CS?

Hmmm, CS? what does CS stand for?
Tech Support Specialist: Mr. Clark, Computer Engineer replied 8 years ago
Cable Select. Look on your HDD and DVD drive. Look at the different pin options and look for Cable Select (or CS).

Hi John, Thank you for your expertise and, more important, for your kindness because they make me, almost, look forward to my next computer problem. After the next problem comes, I'll be delighted to correspond again with you. I'm told that I excel at programing. But system administration has never been one of my talents. So it's great to have an expert to rely on when the computer decides to stump me. God bless, Bill
