Our HP Pavilion (purchased April 17, 2010 at Sam's club) does not respond when clicking on a task unless I hold the left clicker down for a couple of seconds. I am using a microsoft wireless mouse rather than the wired mouse that came with the computer.

Hello and thank you for using Just Answer.

From Start > Control Panel > Mouse on the Buttons tab under double-click speed, increase the speed then double-click the folder on the right to make sure it opens. Click Apply and OK.

Test to see if this improves mouse response.

If this doesn't improve the mouse response then turn off the computer and disconnect the wireless mouse. Connect the wired mouse and boot up and let me know if the symptoms are the same with the wired mouse.

Relist: We purchased this HP Pavilion new in April 2010. At first it was operating just fine, but now it takes multiple attempts to open a task using the mouse, or I have to hold the left clicker down until I can see the computer respond (a circle appears. Very frustrating. Should I take it back to Sam's Club?.

OK please let me know if this has always happened or has recently started happening.

Please download and install the HijackThis installer from http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download. Allow it to install to the default location. Open HijackThis and click 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'. When the scan has completed the log will open in Notepad. Please copy/paste the entire log here

This problem has been present for the past month (starting around mid May 2010). Your suggestion to make the mouse more responsive by increasing its sensitivity has helped.

The responsiveness of the mouse is better, however, the computer is still not working as well as when we first set it up. Should we take it back to Sam's Club?

Post a HijackThis log as directed earlier. This will let us see if there are any programs or malware causing your issues.

To get to the Hijack area I need, it says to go to "run" and type in the following: Notepad C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.

 

How do I get to "run"?

Close HijackThis then from the Start menu right-click on HijackThis and select Run as administrator
