I used Microsoft Update and found 20 updates from Microsoft. All downloaded but one did not install. This is what did not install: Microsoft.Net Framework 1.1 SP1 update for Windows XP (KB979906). This failed. Can you help me install it, assuming it should be installed as Microsoft Update indicated?

Hello,
Thank you for using justanswer.com
I am here to assist you regarding your problem

Windows Update error 80070643 can happen for several reasons. The most common cause is a problem with the .NET Framework installed on the computer. You might also encounter this error when installing updates for Microsoft Office 2003. If you were installing Microsoft Office 2003 updates when you received the error, follow the instructions in the "Microsoft Office 2003" section below. Otherwise, follow the instructions in the "Windows .NET Framework" section.

Show all

The .NET framework is a part of Windows that's used to build, deploy, and run programs and applications. Unfortunately, it can be damaged by some programs, viruses, or hard disk problems.

To repair the .NET Framework automatically

  1. Click this link:

    Repair .NET Framework

Picture of a Fix it button

  2. In the File Download dialog box, click Run, and then follow the steps in the wizard.

  3. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update.

  4. In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.

  5. If any updates are found, click Install updates. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password XXXXX confirmation, type the password XXXXX provide confirmation.

If the previous steps didn't fix the problem, you can reinstall the .NET Framework manually, but the steps involved are intended for advanced users. If you're not comfortable performing these steps, ask a friend to help you. You'll find the steps to follow in the reinstalling the .NET Framework article on the Microsoft website.

To fix this problem, you might need to restart the Office Source Engine (OSE) service and try to install the latest updates for Office products again.

To restart the Office Source Engine (OSE) service

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

  1. Open Administrative Tools by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Administrative Tools.

  2. Double-click Services. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password XXXXX confirmation, type the password XXXXX provide confirmation.

  3. If the Office Source Engine service is disabled, double-click it to open the service properties.

  4. Click the Startup type list, click Automatic (Delayed Start), and then click Apply.

  5. Under Service status, click Start.

For more information about restarting the OSE service, see this Knowledge Base article on the Microsoft Help and Support website.

If the problem persists after you've followed the steps above, go to the Windows Update Support Center website to request support by e-mail.

Do you mean you want me to click Mr. FixIt Again and risk a second computer crash?

No, just restart the computer and then check if that helps.

Sorry for the blank reply I just sent.
I do not understand the instruction "loadTOCNode(2, 'resolution')". Also, when I clicked on "click here" I found very complex instructions and even more complex caveats. I need a step by step approach.
Tech Support Specialist: Qin Xia, Computer Support Specialist replied 8 years ago

Don;t worry "loadTOCNode(2, 'resolution')", it is not relevant.

This is not that complicated.

If you already finish the first step, click here and download the clean tools

After that run it, and make sure you have completely remove .net framwork

Then you can download and then reinstall all the versions of the .NET Framework that were previously installed on the computer.

To download the .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1, visit the following Microsoft Web site:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=A8F5654F-088E-40B2-BBDB-A83353618B38&displaylang=en

I will try. This is what I understand. Go to Add/Remove Programs and look for all .net framework programs. Make note of what these are. Then remove all of them. Then click the "click here" you last gave me, to download the clean tools. Run that tool in order to assure complete removal of .net framework. Then download and reinstall all the versions of .net framework that were removed. (I'm not sure where to get these downloads from.) Then go to the link you supplied and download the file that I can't get to install and install it. Please check over what I have written and see if it is correct. If it is, please explain where I get the replacement downloads from.

Alright. I have successfully used Add/Remove to remove the following: Microsoft Net Framework 1.1, 2.0 Service Pack 2, 3.0 Service Pack 2 and 3.5 SP1. Initially, 2.0 and 3.0 did not want to come off, but they did come off after I removed 3.5. I understand that the next step is to get the tool and run it. Am I correct?

Yes, that is correct.

And after you completely uninstall it, then you only need to install these three:

Install NET Framework 1.1 first
Install NET Framework 1.1 SP1
You can find link in my last reply

Install standalone framework 3.5 SP1, click here

It is newest, and a large file, may take a while

I have used the cleanup tool successfully (it says). But it will now require a restart. If I do that I will need some way to get back in touch with you. Can you please provide this? I will need to get back to this page after I reboot so that I can use the links. I have printed the page but the links are long and it will be very difficult to use them if I cannot just click on this page as necessary. What are your suggestions?

The first two files have been downloaded. 3.5 is downloading now. It is about 25% done. When it is completely installed I will then go back to Microsoft Update to install the file that wouldn't install to begin with. So far, so good.
