no it has never worked on this computer it works on my toshiba laptop but not this newer hp

Yes, what is the exact model number of the computer?

Next click Start, right click Computer then click Manage then Device Manager then find the sound device in the device list and right click on it and click Update then reboot and retest.

when i did this the message is windows encountered aproblem installing the software for your device hp pavilion dv6700 notebook

Ok then next please select the exact model number from the list at the link below then download the audio driver and save to your PC. Then in Device Manager right click the audio device and click Uninstall then reboot then cancel out of any Found New Hardware messages and double click the driver file and follow the prompts to install then reboot and test.

Next in Device Manager click View then Show Hidden Devices then right click on the device with the yellow sign by it (and any others that appeared when you selected Show Hidden Devices) and select Uninstall and then unplug the Soundlink and reboot. Then plug the Soundlink in and verify that it is installed without a yellow sign by it and then test.

Try the same procedure you just tried but plug the soundlink into a different USB port. Also, make sure you are not plugging it into a USB hub.
