Now, go to the Windows PC. Is it a Windows 7 PC, a Windows 8.1 PC, or a Windows 10 PC please? or some other version of Windows?

OK, good... right-click on the WiFi (five bars) icon at the lower right, choose

Open Network and Sharing Center

then at the left of that window, click on Change adapter settings

then in the next window, right-click on WiFi, and choose Status

and then in Status, click on the Wireless Properties button.

Then in the Wireless Properties, click on the Security tab at the top.

Then click to enable the checkbox for 'Show characters' and the WiFi password ***** be revealed.

(After noting it down or using it on another device or both, click on Cancel to close all those windows.)

That will give you the password ***** your WiFi.

'Connected' is not enough - it has to be connected to the WiFi... is your iPhone connected to the WiFi, or is it using fast carrier service instead?

OK, then this is a bit roundabout, but:

on the iPhone, go to

Settings

WiFi

tap on the info button there, and get the Router IP Address.

OK so far?

then with the IP address go to the computer, enter that IP address in the Address of your browser, and log in to the admin username on the router... if you know the router's admin/Setup password, that is.

If you don't, the iPhone likely won't do much good. Do you have an Apple computer with a WiFi connection?

OK, try the IP Address from the iPhone, on the web browser of the computer. See if that brings up the admin login popup, and if so, I'll advise you from there.

OK, good.

Locate the reset button on the router, and hold it down for 30+ seconds, continuously.

Then wait a half minute after releasing it.

Then try the IP address for the router, on your computer, again, and those passwords I just gave you.

The admin username that is, then for password *****

admin

again, or

password

... tell me if that logs you into the router now.

The lights usually don't go off, they turn On after you let go of the RESET button after holding it down 30 seconds. Though that depends upon the router's brand name - ?

Locate the red reset button on the back of your Asus router:

then with a pen point, hold down that red button, for 30+ seconds.

OK... now, restart your computer. When it is restarted, go to

Command Prompt

and then enter a command,

ipconfig

and from it, note the Default Gateway address...

...and in your web browser, enter that default gateway address, and see if you can get the login popup again.

And try 'admin' and 'admin', to log in.

Then hold down the reset button on the router, while it is powered ON not off, for at least 10 seconds continuously, using the tip of a sharpish object. Pay no attention to the lights, just hold it down for that long, please.

OK... well, something is wrong... and I don't think the router is 'broken', since this problem originally was about just finding out its password. So, I have Opted Out, opening the case to other Experts in this area, since my approach is not solving the problem.

I've read through Russell's notes and he did a lot of the steps I would have tried with you as well. I apologize for the length of time for someone to step in and help you out. But I'd be happy to work with you on this if you still need help. A lot of the steps are going to be repeated but there's not a lot of steps to do so please understand that I am only trying to help but possibly approach it from a different way.

I pulled up your manual for this router. The default username should be admin and the password ***** be admin.

If you look at the bottom of your router, do you see a username and password ***** to you? Sometimes they put the username and password ***** the bottom instead. Often it might say what I just told you or the password ***** be a mix of characters.

My next question is do you only have 1 router in your home or multiple? If it is just the one, we can go to the next step.

When you reset the router, it helps if you have a timer. You would not realize the frustration I have had with routers by accidentally slipping off the reset button and having to start over. It has happened so many times. This is why Russell has kept having you hold it for 30 seconds. It doesn't specify in the manual the length of time to hold it down so let's try that again if you were not able to login with my previous steps.

I also have an ASUS router myself along with a few other routers in my house. It helps extend coverage in my home. That's why I asked that. Also, do you still see your wifi network on your other wireless computers? If it still shows up, your router never got reset.

No, you won't need to do that. I was just wondering if your other devices are currently working with your old wifi network. If you still see it, you haven't reset your router to factory settings.

I'm sorry! It's so strange that it won't reset. There is one other way to force it to reset as well. You can unplug it from the power, hold the reset button while you plug it back into the power. That does another forced reboot if you wanted to try that.

I'm sorry for taking you through all the basic steps again. I would be frustrated but I just wanted to clear that you were doing them exactly correct since we didn't have much options other than replacing the router.

I know we weren't able to get this bugger working today (assuming you tried my other suggestion and it doesn't work). Internet setup should just be left alone. It should autofill an IP address. The router setup is where you can find the wireless network setup. That's where you'll put in a password ***** your new wireless network.

Perfect. Your network name can be whatever you want of course or you could leave it as ASUS. The network key can be anything you want. Ideally, don't make it so hard to key but having all lowercase and a number is ***** too. A phrase like "ihatewirelessrouters123" is a good password.
