I am trying to set up a zyxel range extender to use with my

Customer Question

I am trying to set up a zyxel range extender to use with my existing dlink rounter. When I follow the instructions to set up the zyxel and set the ip address, then try to log into the zyxel, it opens up the dlink router login. What am I doing wrong?

Hi, my name is ***** ***** I'm here to help you with this issue.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Allow me a few minutes to check a few things.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
What is the make and model of your range extender?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Zyxel 3205N v2
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Okay, thank you.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
my router is a D-Linkn 655
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
What web or URL address are you trying to use to access the extender?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
http://zyxelsetup
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
the first thing it tells me to do is to set the ip address. As I mentioned when I do that, then enter in the ip address in the address bar, my dlink comes up
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Thank you. For that to work, it has to be http://zyxelsetupxxxx where xxxx is the last four of the extender's MAC address.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
You should be able to find the MAC address on a sticker on the extender or the box that the extender came in or both.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Can you try that?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I looked at the back of the Zyxel and it only shows that ip address I mentioned. There are no extra numbers at the end
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I threw the box away
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Ah okay, one minute please.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
You may have to unplug the device and peer at the MAC address printed on the bottom, in order to extract various digits from this.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
MAC addresses look like this:48-2C-6A-1E-59-3D
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
in this example, the web address would be http://zyxelsetup593D
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I am looking at the bottom. That is where I found the IP address. I can upload a photo if that would help
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Hmm... Okay, if you can upload a photo that would help.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Also, have you tried to go to http://192.168.1.2Does that direct you to your router?
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
I mean, does that direct you to your D-Linkn 655?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
that takes me to the Dlink
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
What is the IP address of your DLINK? in other words, what is your gateway IP address?
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
You may need to log into the DLINK and make sure that it does not have that IP address set for itself.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
well I would have to say the address is the same I am trying to use for the zyxel since that opens the dlink. I have tried to paste a photo into this chat but it doesn't work
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Okay, let's log into the DLINK and check some setting. Please let me know when you are logged in and I'll walk you through what I would like you to check.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
if the dlink has an address set and I delete it won't I loose my connection
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
we won't delete it right away.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
But yes, you would loose connection. But right now, were just checking it out.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
okay it is open
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Is the interface orange and black or blue and white?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
orange and black
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
the IP address in the WAN section is not the 192.168.1
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
What is it?
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Also, what is the subnet mask?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
47.33.62.167
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
why does it open when I enter 192.168...
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
this is so frustrating
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I know 192.168...is a generic address for peripherals but still
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
255.255.255.0 which is the subnet automatically assigned when I set the IP address for the zyxel
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Okay, one sec
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Wait, what was that 47. Number?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
i is 47.33.62.167
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
The ip address of the dlink? Correct? Like in the setup page of the router?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
that is the set up page for the router. Would love to cut and paste to show you but can't
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I am ready to drill a hole in the floor and run a really long ethernet cable under the flooring. Would that work?
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Okay, that may be the issue. That is not a proper ip scheme for a router.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Ha ha, yeah that would work too.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
How many devices are currently connected to your main router?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
would the signal loose integrity with a longer cable? How long do they make them? Wirelessly, there are four devices but not all being used at the same time
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Ipad, Iphone desk top and lap top
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
100 meters is the longest you can go before signal loss. So we need to change the IP address of the router and make it 192.168.1.1.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
But I dont know if any devices you use have static ip adresses. Or if you have settings that need translated to the new ip scheme...
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
okay but if I loose my connection when I do that, how do I get you back
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Things should automatically reconnect once you make the change. But if they don't then you may not be able to connect until you can get someone to help you phyiscally at the devices.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
What do you want to do?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I need to do that through the Dlink administration web site, yes?
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Let me tell you exactly how.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I will reset the dlink ip. Cross your fingers
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
waiting for your instructions
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Go to Setup, then click Network Settings.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Change the Router IP to 192.168.0.1, subnet to 255.255.255.0.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Then, Enable DHCP Server
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
set up on the computer not through the dlink website
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
IP range will be 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
No, this is on the Dlink website. like this:
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
ok
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
when I open router settings, it is already set to 192.168.0.1
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
alright, what about the DHCP IP range?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
it is as you said
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
hmm... okay, interesting... One minute.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
How are you currently connected to the internet?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
through the dlink wireless
I have a modem from charter
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
With the extender plugged in, are you able to see the ZyXEL wireless network available to connect to?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
the modem and the dlink are connected with an ethernet cable - guess that is painfully obvious. I do not have the zyxel connected with a cable. Is that where I went wrong
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
according to the zyxel quick start, I should be able to push the button on the extender and push the button on the router and poof! It is supposed to work
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Ah, yes that sometimes works with that WPS button. but you still should be seeing a ZyXEL wireless network available to connect on the computer you are using.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
if you fell off of your chair laughing, don't tell me- it will hurt my feelings!
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Ha ha, no. I'm just trying to figure out what's going on.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I don't think I could do your job. I could learn the tech side, I could not learn the tolerance for less than intelligent people
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
If I plug the zxel into the router with a cable, do you think that will clear this up
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
hmm...
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
You shouldn't have to, but let me ask you do you see a ZyXEL wireless network available to connect on the computer you are using
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
no
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
the extender is currently plugged in?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I do see an unidentifed public network that wasn't there yesterday
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Okay, there should be a switch on the side of the device that has three options AP UR and CL
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
What is it currently set to.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
to a power source, yes. The wifi is lit and there is symbol that looks like a key lit up also
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
cl
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
the key looking thing is the same as what is on the magic button that was supposed to make this set up "quick and easy"
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
power it off, change it to UR and try to do the same WPS button setup on the quick start guide
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
ok. I did that
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I checked my network settings and it now says I have multiple networks but it doesn't say Zyxel
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Any new networks that weren't there before?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
just the same unidentified public network. Could that be because I haven't configured the security
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
maybe the unidentified is really zyxel
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Try this first. Take a cable and connect the Zyxel and the Dlink router together.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I'm afraid to try and connect to it because I might loose you
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Once connected, try to go to the http://192.168.0.2
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
ok I will
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
okay
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
the unidentified public network is gone now
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
but still doesn't show zyxel
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
there is now an extra light lit on the dlink
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
but I think think that just signifies something is plugged in to the port, yes?
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
That is correct.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I think I am ready for a glass of wine
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
I'm honestly not sure what to do next in this situation...
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
It could be that the device needs to be reset? Is it brand new or did someone give it to you?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
shotgun? Skeet shooting using a zyxel
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
brand new
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I give up. I don't say that very often but I've been at this for days now
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I appreciate your efforts.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Of course, I'm sorry about this.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
I think the best thing may be to get a different extender with better instructiions.
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
I think this one may not be working correctly......
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Have a great evening. I hope your next chat is quicker and goes better!
Expert:  A. Stevens replied 1 year ago.
Thank you, ***** ***** great evening yourself.
