Do you know the make and model of the WiFi extender your father bought?
The outdoor model (TP-LINK TL-WA5210G) transmits the signal in the radius of about 500 feet, but it first needs to connect to the existing modem/router. I am not sure which modem/router you have there on the property, but all standard devices transmit the signal in the radius of about 300 feet. So, the maximum distance that will allow you to connect would be about 800 feet.
